Shot in the dark here - but I am looking at laptops and the Dell 1464 has caught my eye.

14" HD WLED
i5 430M
4gb DDR3
500gb 5400RPM :)()
Radeon HD4330

Aside from the HD which I wish was an SSD, I feel the deal is good. But what is the quality like? In the past I have loved Dell but the experience my family has had with the recent XPS M1550/M1330 has really crushed such notions.

I really like the packaging too and the price is much lower than what I was able to find elsewhere for similar systems.

So what are your thoughts? Anyone have one?

Since you asked...

The visual design of the XPS 13 and 15 are nice, no doubt. But the quality control seems to be lacking, again from my own experiences.

My father's has issues right clicking because the button is in a half-broken state. He also gets a lot of BSODs when going into sleep or hibernate. I guess some would say that this is an issue with a lot of laptops, but it shouldn't be. My PC at home sleeps exactly as it should day in and day out and I need that functionality to work on my laptop.

My sister's 13 has been okay in with respect to the problems of the XPS15 but has had nearly all the internals replaced, some more than once. She has also had issues with Wireless USB and BSODs.

Both the XPS 13 and 15 have overly sensitive trackpads that lead to incorrect clicks and consequently incorrect type placement.

My last Dell was the Inspiron 8600 which aside from the faulty ATI card, was a very solid machine. It recently died beyond repair though and has severely outdated hardware.

sounds like i got lucky, glad for that.

as i said, my brother bought that inspiron and loves it. i used it for a few minutes, seems solid enough. so far nothing broken (fingers crossed, knock on wood).

dell has never been a QC company. they are a send it out quick and provide solid warranty and service after the fact. i don't even bother getting parts replaced by them, i simply have them send a new machine if a problem arises. once you get a good one it seems to stay that way though.
