i know a lot of people who have, and it's damn awesome.

it's about $6-8 PER led, so that gets pretty pricey here. it looks damn cool, the phone doesn't break, and you can't do it yourself (well you can, but not reccommended).

Im thinking about it i can get the leds for about 36 bucks for a full set but im not to keen on soldering.

If i knoew how to solder then i would jump on this.

It looks like I'm gonna have to run in to where I work. I can't find a small Torx bit in my dad's box, and my good one is at work. DAMN. :|

Lemme take the dog out, go the bathroom, and run in to work. The things I do for you people... :D

It looks so cool, I would do it to my 3210, but there is a slight problem with blue on the 3210.

The blue LEDs need a higher voltage than the standard green ones. On the 3210, the internal voltage converter is set too low to light blue LEDs. I understand that is possible to modify the voltage converter so that it can light them, but there are annoying side effects like, after the mod, the LEDs are always on meaning that battery life is shot to pieces.

I might see if I can get some red or orange ones though, they look pretty cool.

anyone have the link for the light conversion ? i had it bookmarked and forgot to back it up when i got my new hdd (doh !)

i just started soldering and if it's not too hard a job i may just do it myself on my 6190, i don't mind screwing up the phone. i love insurance =D

Umm...

I somehow doubt that insurance will cover you destroying your phone with a soldering iron...

actually with pacbell it includes everything, no questions asked. you don't even need verification of the old phone, just say "oops i lost it" and they give you a replacement in 1-2 days. i actually know of friends who've abused this by claiming it was lost, etc, and getting a new 2nd phone for free, then selling the original or giving it out to a relative. if you can unlock the sim you're able to use it on other networks as well.

for $3 a month there's no better deal, we all treat our phones like crap and love it =)

I was surprised what insurance covers. An actual situation.

My brother BimmerDogg's girl dropped a chair on his cell and cracked the LCD.

Scene: Omnipoint store.
Celldude: It'll take 3 - 4 weeks to fix. Wanna rent a phone in the meantime?
Windogg: WHAT?!?!?
BimmerDogg: Can you replace it now?
Celldude: Only if it is beyond repair.
Windogg: Really? <<< Takes battery off phone and places on counter >>> Excuse us please.

Scene: Parking lot.

Phone placed behind left rear wheel of 97 Bimmer 540 Sport (Traction Control Off)

Windogg: ALRIGHT GUN IT!!!!

*** CRUNCH ***

Scene: Back in the store
BimmerDogg: Uhhhhh.... I think its beyond repair
Celldude: <<< Eyes Wide Open >>> Uhhhhhh..... the deductible is $35, how would you like to pay?

Ok. After going through hell and high water, I bought a screw driver set at Sears that has the Torx screwdrivers. (Part# 9_45736) Dissassembly beginning now...

lol yep that's exactly it. my friend got his locked by accident with a password, not quite sure how. but it was unrecoverable, and the cell place said they couldn't "hack" it or bypass it in anyway, so he'd need a whole new replacement. the guy actually suggessted (whispering over the counter...) that if he had insurance, soak it in a bucket of water one day for 24 hrs and come back to claim the insurance.

you can imagine my shock when i came in and found my friend sitting at his cubby typing away with his cell phone dipped inside a styrofoam cup of water, lol. sure enough he got a new phone, a newer model might i add, with new games =)

Ok. Here is the outlook...

DO NOT TRY IT.

Unless you are really good at soldering surface mount LED's (What I figured) There are 10 LED's for the keypad, and some more for the LCD backlighting. To get to these, the phone PCB needs taken out, flipped, and the LED's changed. The backlight LED's are a little harder to do. If you don't have a hot air SMD gun, I would highly recommend you don't try this swap at home. A regular soldering iron will butcher the LED's, and the rest of the phone.

Translated - "Don't try this at home, kids." Unless you have nerves of steel, a hot air SMD gun (Or a soldering iron with a "REALLY" micro ass tip and less than 15 watts), tweezers, and a good insurance policy on your phone.

Sorry for the bad news guys. :(

<Edit>

I don't have plans, I am just winging it :) Now I gotta put the SOB back together. ;)

heh, crapola. yea i've opened my phone several times before, and seen the led's. i was wondering exactly what kind of soldering iron would be best, i've got a 30w iron with a pretty large point so i didn't think that would cut it, that pretty much confirms it.

on the 6190 there's 6 for the backlight display and another 6 for the keypad i believe, the ones on the backlight are much harder because they're mounted on the side as opposed to a straight flat surface on the pcb.

Professionally done of course.
