is this common practice?

2 years ago I ripped off my toe nail while climbing out of the shower. I went to the hospital immediately and all they did was reattach the toe nail. Final bill was $750.00 I paid them on a monthly basis. $5 bucks here, $20 bucks there....

Yea, it's expensive but if you don't have the money then just do what I did until it's paid off.

All the hospitals around here bill the doctor and hospital seperate. I can't believe you think you can attend the ER for $87. You can't ask them parking directions for that much money.

well i dont have insurance, or a personal doctor, so to me, its not common knowledge. i had an ingrown toenail, doc looked at it, gave me choice between surgery, or antibiotics, i chose pills. gave me prescription, then i left. total cost: $300. blah. i guess i'll just pay it and make this a learning expereince.

Yeah, it depends on the hospital...some hospitals pay the doctors to work there, and others just contract the doctors in, and then let the doctors bill their own expenses separately.

Some procedures are performed only by doctors that work at the local hospital. Like ones that use expensive imaging equipment. Anyway, you can expect to get no less than two bills for such a procedure: one from the hospital and one from the doctor. Medical billing is a scam, anyway.

No one *EVER* has any idea how much something is going to cost. In my town, there is probably only *ONE* place to get any given medical procedure (beyond office visit). And when the bill goes to my insurance, they only pay part of it because they decided that it was beyond the usual and customary charge for such a procedure. Not that I could have known in advance what they were going to charge OR have gone to a competitor if I did know.

My wife was in the ER a couple of months ago.
She got 4 separate bills.
One from the hospital.
One from the radiologist for an ultrasound.
One from the lab for some blood tests.
One from the doctor.

Total of about $800 and they didn't do ANYTHING for her except tell her to go home and hope for the best. She was 3 months pregnant and had some bleeding from separation of the placenta from the uterine wall. She is now at six months and everything is fine now.

After insurance payment, we owed about $100.

I drove to the emergency room at 2:00am one morning because I thought I might be having a heart attack. That's when I learned that I'd had a broken neck and didn't know it.:D Cost me 10 bucks for xrays, tests and the whole shot. That's the only time I ever liked Kaiser.

That doesn't sound right at all, was she ever seen by a physician? Can you fight this type of billing?

You would have done better to pick a local physician and do it on a non-ER visit. Much cheaper that way. They definitely nail you for a premium for visiting the ER.

And yes, I have been to the ER. Not recently though. Got hit in the mouth with my own surfboard one morning a few summers ago while surfing. Had to get stitches that day, there was no option as my lower lip was split in half. The doc did a nice job though, you can barely see the scar.

I have heard that medical bills cannot wreck your credit.

They all suck though!

I saw an episode of Resident Life last night on TLC and the guy broke his neck and he was moving around and stuff.. they had to tape his head to the table so hed stop moving and cause major damage. So it is possible.

Actually, it wasn't really a surprise. Yeah, she was seen by the OB who was on-call for the practice she goes to.
By not do anything for her, what I meant was that after they had checked her out (ultrasound to look at the placenta and the baby, blood tests to check for certain conditions) , there was really nothing that could be done. Basically, she was either going to miscarry or she wasn't. Luckily, everything is fine with the pregnancy now. But other than arguing about how much the doctors and hospital should charge for their services, there is nothing to fight.

Ya, you can still move with a broken neck; only your bones are broken, not your muscles. The prob is that a piece of bone could cut off your spinal cord and you'd instantly be paraplegic. That's not good. Thus, the neck restraints.
MD.

Not true. They can send them to a collection agency just like any other overdue bill and they will be reported to the credit agencies.
