I need a new Wii game, but not too sure about this one. Reviews have been pretty good. Anyone picking it up today? How do you like it?

I just picked it up after work today and had a short tutorial lesson. So far it looks pretty good and plays pretty well. Haven't gotten too far into yet but will probably have some friends over later to give it a real go.

it uses the wii mote and the nunchuck. A to pass the ball around, B to shoot/charge then shoot/ z to push the ball a little, shake the wii mote near an opponent to tackle them. Some more I think haven't played that much yet. There's not many motion dependent controls which makes the controls feel less tacked on.

Been really enjoying it so far...not that I'm surprised, because I loved the original. The differences:

Sidekicks are MUCH different, and each is very unique.

The dekes are unique to each character - hammer bros smashes people with a hammer, dry bones teleports, etc

Sidekicks can also do skill shots after charging, which IMO are more useful than the mega strikes. Most of them are like electric/fire balls that bounce off the goalie and then give you a chance to kick it back in when theyre stunned. Hammer bros have a pretty wicked one - they throw huge hammers out in front of themselves, and if youre juuust the right distance, those hammers will plow through the goalie and you kick the ball right in.

In other words, hammer bros. pwn your face completely.

Mega strikes, which turn brings up a minigame, is the WORST idea ever. Its nearly impossible to get one started against anyone who knows what theyre doing. If youre playing against a newb, he will miss every single one. If youre playing against a pro, he will block every single one.

They took out the turbo button - theres a much wider diff in speed between characters/sidekicks.

The only motion controls are waggle wiimote for smash, and waggle nunchuk to switch items. And the only IR is in menus and blocking mega strikes. Its just right.

Its a lot of fun on wifi - its as simple as it gets though. Its lag free when you have a good connection, and you can choose whether or not to accept the match based on connection. Even though you have ZERO interaction b/w you and your opponent, the fact that you just kicked a sweet goal in someones face is still damn fun. Friend codes suck, and voice chat would be awesome with friends, but I don't miss being called a n*****r by 8 year olds.

Anyway, great game, easily worth your money, ESPECIALLY if you have friends who have it or come over and know how to play.

I've had fun with it the little I've played.

I did have one horrible online match though. It said the connection was 2 stars (out of 4), but right when I clicked accept it dropped down to a 1 star connection. The game went painstakingly slow.

Oh man, this sucks so bad! I was putting this vicious beating on some dude, and when I knocked another 3 mega strikes in his face he hit the reset button, and I got disconnected - and when I got back to the screen, one of the component cables (blue) isnt giving any signal anymore and all I get is half color! I dunno whether its the cable or the port, or some crazy software glitch....I have no reason to believe that the cable or port would spontaneously die, but I have no reason to believe that it had anything to do with that sore loser resetting on me, yet the timing was dead on...wtf?

Phew...turns out it was my splitter. And for a minute I thought the Wii had just overloaded and couldnt handle my strikers skills... :p

My friend code is 094596 007 1597 if anyone is down for a whipping. :p

Sounds fun but I dont think Ill be buying in. Voice might be nice but I dont mind the lack of it. From what I hear, XBOX live is littered with 8 year olds who swear like drunken sailors.

well, after some more playing I have a couple more thoughts:

it takes forever to get connected and log in. It seems the statistical download takes forever for some reason.

And, the rankings are kind of dumb. You get 10 points for a win and 1 point for a loss plus points for each goal you score. So if you beat the 10th ranked person or the 1000th ranked person, you still get the same 10 points.

It seems to hang a bit on the stats screen, and I get disconnected every now and then. But I absolutely love the game...its so addicting, and so competitive. Even though the mega strikes can be a bit cheap, it is a game of skill.

I only wish the rankings were based on ratio rather than total wins/points. I've got as good a ratio as anyone on the top 10 (30-5...6:1), but I'm only number 400 something.

Sounds good. I might try to pick it up this weekend.

Can you play online without using friend codes? I assume no, but Madden is doing it so I wasn't sure if Mario Strikers for the USA was able to add that.

Ya, of course. You just pick ranked match and it matches you up with someone random. I dont even have anyone elses code yet.

Mine is in the mail.

So if you're playing online, how many people can you play on one Wii? Can me and my friend play on one Wii against my brother and his friend on another Wii?

Yep. In fact, thats the only way 4 people can play online. Its two wiis connecting with up to 2 people on each.

Based on what you guys were saying and the decent reviews it was getting, I went to Walmart last night and bought it. Played one game and realized I needed to spend more time on the tutorials.

Yeah, its a little confusing at first...theres so much going on, and a lot of controls. Its not a simplified casual game by any means. But once you get the hang of it, you wont be able to stop. Its probably my favorite sports game ever.

Have you ever played Mario Power Tennis on the Gamecube? That's my favorite sports game ever.

Yep. Thats my second favorite, and I've got my fingers crossed for the eventual Wii version. Mario tennis and strikers have always been the best two "mario sports" games. I never really liked baseball or golf too much because those sports don't lend themselves to the crazy, fast paced action of tennis and soccer.

I think the whole mario thing drives some people away from the games that would otherwise love them. They're truely intense, well balance, solid games underneath the mario face, with strikers being the most hardcore of all.

The only thing that bothers me is the fact that in some mario games, kart and strikers being the worst example, if you're behind by a little, you can be granted a powerup that gives a decent player a solid opportunity to come back and completely crush you, such as the blue shell.

I've destroyed a few people online due to this...I let them beat me up a little bit at the start, so I can get the star or the chain chomp. Then once that comes out, nothing can stop me from pulling off the 6 ball super strike, and all of a sudden it goes from 0-1 to 4-1.

But at least in strikers, you can block the mega strikes if you know what youre doing, so its not nearly as arbitrary as mario party or anything. And theres just so much variation in the characters, and especially the sidekicks, you can come up with some wicked strategies if you know what youre doing.

I personally use waluigi, two hammer bros up front, and dry bones in the back.

The hammer bros are slow as hell, but they have the best skill shot, and the best deke. You can stun people with the deke by smashing them if they try to come near you. You can even cut off your shot charge and deke anyone that tries to smash you. The player will get used to this, expect you to deke as youre shooting and try and wait for it to smash you afterwards. But once I see them holding back, I just dont deke, and they end up letting me get the shot off, smashing the goalie and kicking it right in.

Waluigi and dry bones are defensive...both super fast, and both have a very long slide/steal. I use them to get the ball up close to the goal, or to steal the ball back. Their deke is a teleport, which if timed right, can teleport you past the goalie. And waluigis super skill seems useless (he trails a wall behind him), but its absolute godly if you know how to use it. Get waluigi the ball, and outrun everyone to a corner, and then wall yourself in. Then you're free to mega strike as hard as you want - they won't be able to touch you.

The wiimote smash is strong, but it doesnt get you the ball if you hit someone straight on. Try and use the trip if you can so you can take the ball immediately and run away.

And if you've got a sole player running up to the goal and you want to hit it hard without waiting to charge or passing it around, just chip the ball in front of you (Z), and then smack it in - its like passing to yourself.

And when you're passing, use the lob pass unless you've got a perfect pass lined up. The lob pass can't be stolen since its over everyones head, they can only really hit the player its aimed at. Which gives you a free item, so let them do it.

Eh...its very simple on the surface, and you can have plenty fun without getting too advanced, but theres quite a bit more to it than it looks.
