It means the power save function. Or just turning off the monitor connected with DP (or DP->DVI active adapter). That's why I have to leave that monitor on 24/7 to avoid it resetting and messing up my desktop. Dell is refusing to address the issue and suggesting idiotic things like disconnecting and reconnecting the monitor... which uhm.. still means my desktop is messed up and adds extra work on top of it. DP simply causes Windows to reset my desktop to whatever the default display is if I turn off that monitor or let it go into power save (and yup, of course also reset if I physically disconnect it).
The sleep problems may be both GPU and monitor, but the "messed up desktop" is unfortunately a "feature" of drivers+OS, not a bug.
And monitor is the least at fault here, because I think DP spec requires it to notify GPU that it's powered off. The driver then proceeds to disable the monitor, probably for power saving reasons. And when you disable the display, OS will cram everything from it to the other display. When you power off DVI display, GPU and OS don't know about it so they don't get a chance to act on it.

It's an idiotic feature, I hate it too. The most common case for me is when I want to watch a movie on my HDTV connected as an extended desktop. I will turn off the lights and I also want to turn off the primary monitor during the movie as it's distracting. It's only for the duration of the movie, I don't want it to move all the browser, explorer, documents and other windows to the TV, it's just annoying to restore them back.
So I use miniDP->DVI adapter even though the monitor has DP (I'd need an adapter anyway, as the monitor is full DP). However, I can't use my 2nd monitor, which is some crappy 22" TN, so not much loss there.

Still, this DP behavior is a deal-breaker for me. They should at least make it configurable.

From everything I've seen there's nothing indicating that its a cable problem. Or there might be an additional problem with bad cables, but that's not this issue. Blaming cables is just the default answer to avoid responsibility, so this is likely what the manufacturer of the monitor or the graphics card will throw at you.

DP is the issue.

Hi all,
Just registered, finally found people having the same trouble as I.
I have a MSI Nvidia 970 and had the thought to try out a triple screen setup using the old monitor I'd just replaced, which required me to purchase a displayport cable.
Everything worked ok but because the old monitor wasn't full HD I didn't like having to downgrade the others in order to play games so I removed it again.

I left the main monitor with the DP cable plugged in (these are meant to be superior to DVI I thought?) but EVERY time the display resumed after being turned off it would crash the Nvidia drivers (running latest non-beta and tried rolling back to the previous one).

I thought the problem was to do with sleeping the monitors so I disabled that and just turned them off... same thing happened. Crashes the driver, driver resumes, main PC tells me no signal is being received, I unplug the DP cable and plug it back in to the monitor and all is well again with the obvious annoyance that all my desktop icons have reset their locations and not how I'd spent ages getting them just where I want them.

So, fellow people who are suffering, I'm glad I've found you, however, as I don't need to run with the DP cable now I'm switching back to using the DVI-D cable. However this won't help if I ever do want to run triples.

This is the cable I purchased.

Hi, Everyone!
Just registered after finding this thread in a search.
I know the thread is old, but my concern is whether this problem has been sorted out?
I am doing 6 Setups of Quad Monitor and for this, I have shortlisted AMD FirePro W4100 GPU’s and Dell U2415 monitors.
I will be doing the following at 4 x 1920x1200@60Hz in Extended Mode:-
1) My Equity, Commodity, Forex and Binary Options Trading business
where I need to manage lots of Tables, Charts, and Graphs.
2) Account Reconciliation work
where the primary applications are MS-Excel, Word and my Accounting Software all in 2D only.
3) There will be STRICTLY NO Video Games, Graphics, Video Editing, PhotoShop, Corel Draw, Maya, AutoCAD etc. work at all on this Set-up.
4) If possible, occasionally would like to watch Movies in the “Eyefinity” Display Set-up i.e. SLS (Single Large Screen) which in my case will be {3840 x 2400 i.e. (1920 x2) x (1200x2)}.
But, this movie watching is strictly a secondary matter. If I can do it, Ammmmmazing, if not, sad but OK.

I will be directly connecting each monitor DP Input with each GPU Mini DP Output by a Mini-DP to DP Cable which is provided by Dell along with the monitor. No daisy chaining etc.
Now, you people must have guessed it why I became so sceptical after seeing this thread.
Coincidentally, I landed on your above post, which was totally an EYE OPENER and SHOCKING at the same time.
BUT, I DID NOT FIND ANY UPDATE ON THE MATTER EVEN AFTER 1½ YEARS.
So, my concern is that,
1) Whether this problem still persists or it has been rectified now?
2) Can I go ahead with my Quad Setup?

Waiting for your guidance.
Thanks in advance!
