Considering a job in the area but have never been there.

I would be interested if people had any input on what the area is like...is it a nice place to live, lots to do, weather, etc?

Thanks

Colder than you are used to. Southfield isn't reallythe best place to live, but many of the surrounding suburbs are very wealthy.

It is a very diverse city. If you move into a city surrounding it, i would say do it. Southfield is not bad or anything like Detroit but it is not amaizngly wonderful either, as iamwiz82 said though, there are a lotof nice suburbs surrounding it. :)

Metro Detroit has tons of stuff to do, sports, concerts, museums, lots of history, some great places to eat too.
Many people tend not to believe that Michigan has a lot to offer in some ways, but we do. :)
Not like NY or LA, but still there is a lot going on.

You may have a lot going on in Detroit. However, I really enjoyed camping on Lake MI in the summer. It was like 74 F during the day tops.

Awesome!

i work in Southfield.......it's a decent location as far as having access to major highways. not much to do in the city itself, but you can just hop on the highways and travel to Detroit or where ever. i think it's relatively inexpensive to live in Southfield.

like iamwiz82 and lolawiz said, the surrounding suburbs are nice, but can be a little more expensive to live. i suppose that depends on where you're looking to live (house, apartment, condo, etc).

Southfield is ok place to work but as someone pointed out I would probably live in a different burb. Royal Oak is close to southfield if you are the young trendy type, plenty of other nice family areas surrounding southfield. The greatest thing about Michigan for me was the lakes. Michigan has ton's of lakes and beautiful outdoor areas that are great for water skiing, boating, sailing etc. Detroit has things to do (sports, restaurants) but nightlife is better in the burbs. I just remember there was a ton to do spending summers biking to Harson's island, skiing on friends boats, heading up to Traverse City for the weekend, etc.

Southfield is ok, there really isn't much to do there. A lot of automotive companies have offices there, but thats about it. Check out troy, farmington hills or bloomfield for places to live. The commute won't be bad and the residential areas are much better.

edit: forgot birmingham... very wealthy subdivision

thanks for the responses.

I fortunately am very used to the cold having grown up in Upstate NY just south of the Adirondacks

I lived in the Metro Detroit area for 10 years. Specifically, I lived in Mt. Clemens, Farmington Hills, Southfield and Royal Oak (my favorite). I really enjoyed lving there and still travel to northern Michigan for weekend/vacation time several times a year.

How old are you? Different suburbs around here can appeal to different age groups. Southfield's mostly packed with businesses and neighborhoods, with little to do other than the main strip on Telegraph (Tel Twelve Mall area)...like others have said, you do have easy access to many highways, so whether you're heading west to plymouth/novi/ann arbor or east/north to troy/royal oak, it's only a ~20 minute drive.

I think you should give us an idea of what you like to do on a day to day basis so we can suggest a proper location.
