anyone from or around Norfolk, West Virginia?

I have a possibility of moving there for a job promotion...

whats the city like? busy? fast paced? small town feel? expensive?

you know php, cold fusion, js, asp, html, mysql and have 5+ years of web development experience?

I live in Virginia Beach. If you move to Tidewater you should do the same.

What's it like? The ultimate suburbia. Everything you want is here without the slums of the big cities. Taxes are a bit high (throughout the entire state) but the cost of living isn't too bad. Gas is about $1.55/gal right now, a gallon of milk is ~$3.00, and Cox internet is $30/month if you have your own modem.

What else can I tell you?

awesome, it sounds like paradise compared to where i'm at now

how far is the drive into norfolk? how is the area where gannett's headquarters is at?

Virginia Beach and Norfolk share a long border, you can leave and enter both cities several times driving on a straight shot of one road in some places. 😀

I don't know where Gannett is but from my house to downtown Norfolk takes me 15 minutes with average traffic. It's not too bad at all.

Norfolk is a military town. I had a teacher who was from there, and he said that when the sailors hit land in large numbers, the city pretty much goes nuts for a night or two.

Actually, the taxes in Virginia are not too bad. State income tax is at the rate of 5.75% for income amounts greater than $19.5K (IIRC). Sales taxes on purchases are at the rate of 4.5%. There are DMV registration fees of $31.50 per year on cars and a small personal property tax rate - which was in the process of being phased out.

Sure, other states are free of sales taxes on purchases or state taxes on income, but the state will have higher tax rates in other areas (e.g. real estate) to make up for it. I don't recall Virginia doing too badly in the state tax rankings when compared to other states in the information that I've read in issues of Money magazine.

im from virginia beach and regularly go to norfolk....norfolk is all restaurants stores, the one mall, many factories then low level housing....we call it ghetto
Va beach is beautiful....middle class....some places have millionaires....better malls not as cramped as norfolk

You are right, of course, but I think our personal property tax might be a bit steeper than you pay up there. We have to fund our tourism with something, they sure aren't going to make the tourists do it. 🙂

I hate to have to pay for parking for a public beach when I live here and pay all the taxes I'm supposed to. I never had to pay before I went off to boot camp (1988). 🙁

Oh, jntdesign, if you like the beach, learn to find your way to Sandbridge. It's remote, not too crowded, and the parking is free. The beach is better too.
