Anyone from Nashville? I'm moving there in April, what does ATOT think of Nashville?

I'm currently looking for a place to live. I took a new job and will be moving there in April.

I plan on living on my own (currently have roommates) and I would like to live in a good area with lots of nightlife and places to eat. Some people that I have talked to have mentioned The Gulch. They have talked to also said to stay away from right downtown (2nd and Broadway) because of the noise and it is full of tourists.

I was wondering if anyone from ATOT has lived there and has an opinion.

I'm a 28 year old single male. I currently live in Royal Oak, MI (burb of Detroit) and am walking distance to downtown Royal Oak - absolutely love it. I really don't want to pay more than $1500 a month, but will if it is the right place.

I picture everyone wearing cowboy boots and hats with a Telecaster strapped to their back, walking slightly bow legged, and a piece of straw hanging out of their mouths. Maybe singing early Elvis songs too.

But that's just me...because if it were like that I would SO MOVE THERE.

I've passed through a few times but from what I understand there's some area that used to be industrial or something of that sorts that's being revitalized/rebuilt pretty close the downtown area. Seem to recall it being it what's called the "germantown" area.

I know its not right, nice, acceptable, Christian, etc....but I can't stand the south. Well....I can't stand the slow people. They really do annoy the piss out of me.

The Gulch is the industrial part of downtown that is now full of condos and its being revitalized. It's a pretty cool part of town for single people because of where it is and the nightlife and restaurants around it.

Germantown is another part of town (right outside of downtown) that is an older neighborhood that is being revitalized. A lot of good restaurants and bars in the area. I know a few people who live there.

We live north of town on the lake. A lot of people also live south of town in Franklin/Brentwood/Cool Springs. But it's more family living.

I work downtown on West End. I’d personally look into living here: http://www.iconinthegulch.com/ or somewhere in the Gulch like that.

or

http://www.encorecondos.com/building.html I have friends who live here and it’s very nice. It’s directly behind the Symphony Hall and Country Music Hall of Fame.

Other than that, there are a bunch of other new condo buildings spread out around the Gulch and downtown. I don’t know them that well though. I can ask around if you’d like.

Thanks for the info! In the Gulch, is there a specific corner/intersection 90+% of the restaurants/bars are located? Right now my walkscore is 91 and I want to make sure I keep it in the same ballpark at my new location.

Nashville is awesome. Anyone who thought the town was dead when they were here for a week was obviously in the wrong place. 😉

LL is right on with ICON in the Gulch if you can afford it. There are other high rise condo developments downtown as well. I've been here for quite awhile and still love going down town to the Broadway area even if it is full of tourists. There is a ton of good music going on down there so why let the tourists get all the fun?

Shoot me a PM if you need me to look into anything for you. I can't remember the specifics on the Gulch but pull up googlemaps walk view on 12th avenue (I believe that's correct) and you should be able to find what you need.

I didn't care for it much. I only visited once though. Lots of cowboy hats and boots. Good BBQ. Not much ethnic food.

I've been there plenty of times, the Nissan plant is close, I usually stayed at the Hampton across the street from a nice steak house ... cant remember the name now. People are generally nice, downtown was fun. Cost of living should be significantly less than Royal Oak.

asking the idiots here for an opinion is just a waste of time. i live in east tn. I did a 6 month stint in Nashville. It is a fine city. Nothing wrong with it all....lots to do...diversified population...ignore the momos on this thread, esp. rudeguy.

The Icon is right on the corner of 12 ave and division street.

This tells the restaurants and bars in the area. Most of those places are on the same block and good. They don't mention Ru Sans, but it's a sushi/japanese hotspot right across the street.

During the summer you may want to look into getting a bike. You're probably a 3-4 minute ride from central downtown. Also, you're close to http://www.cumminsstation.com/ There's a lot of places around that area. We're always going down to http://www.beerknurd.com/ to have a beer or two or three! They have like 200+ different beers. It's a cool spot.

Remember, there are a bunch of other places to go that aren't all cowboy hats and country music. Sure, you can go down to broadway and enjoy that, but there are a lot of other great hidden gems that aren't touristy.

Well if you like urban living... you can get a condo for about 1/3 of what your neighbors paid two years ago. So now is the time to buy if you are staying.

I work in downtown Nashville. I would never own a home in Nashville because your property taxes will be used to pay for a football team, hockey team, a new under construction $600 million -1.5 Billion convention center.

Overall it is a nice city. Kind of like a large small town. No state income tax and schools get most of their money through sales tax so most property tax rates are reasonable.

The Gulch is a decent area. There really aren't too many apartments near the beloved patriot tonks anyway. Most of downtown is decent. 20+ years ago broadway was like the old times square, peep shows, adult book stores, etc. All that is gone now.

Public transportation sucks. They have an okay bus system... but it will take you forever to get across town.

Oh and if you get busted for getting a hooker, they put your picture on a website for 30 days. http://police.nashville.org/ppa/index.asp Poor Vijay.

Where will you be working? People always refer to Nashville downtown... but that can actually be spread out. West End area near Vanderbilt U. is fairly nice as well.

Thank you for your help everyone, this is great info.

I will be taking a job with Mars in a rotational program. My first rotation is with Mars Petcare in Franklin, TN. I will be there for about 12 months, then will likely rotate to a different part of the US. I want to make sure I'm in the best/most exciting area of Nashville because it will only be a brief stay.

Franklin is about 20 minutes South of Nashville in an adjoining county. Nice area as it is the wealthiest county in Tennessee and is also home to the new Nissan North America HQ. Although roads have not kept up with increased population. Not the same type of nightlife as the gulch. At least if you still decide to live downtown you would be going against traffic.

how much time have you spent in the South exactly?

Also, the OP is from around Detroit, you can't tell me that Nashville is a worse city than Detroit when it comes to any sort of objective measure...

PS: I went to college at Vanderbilt in Nashville, and had a great time there, although TBH I didn't really leave campus on a regular basis. I know its known as the "Music City" and all, but its not like that is the only thing going on there. Its not like if you hate country music that they are going to kick you out of town.

I have always had fun times in Nashville, if I had to move east of here that would be one of the few places I would live outside of Florida.

They just opened up a new Mars Petcare facility in Fort Smith, AR btw. I would advise that you NOT move there if you are a single 28 yr old male.

there are places to live downtown, but they're ridiculously overpriced (for the area) and you might have to walk/drive through a ghetto to get anywhere. there are basically lots of 'bad' parts of town randomly interspersed all over the place, typically centered around some kind of low income housing. the cheapy apartments (mostly mexicans) are less bad than the welfare areas (yeah, projects, black people, stereotypes...but it's there). such areas are often oddly adjacent to much more wealthy areas. if you want to live downtown(ish), i wouldn't live anywhere but west end (vanderbilt area, basically). but that shit's pretty expensive.

the only benefit of living in the city would be the reverse commute. driving south away from town of a morning and north of an afternoon will be a breeze.

personally, if you've got the cash, i would just get a nice apartment in brentwood. probably won't cost 1500 a month, even there. reasonably sized apartments can be had in the decent-but-not-ghetto areas for maybe $600-900 a month. even around franklin, there are cheap places, and they get cheaper as you go north towards the city or east towards antioch and smyrna/lavergne. murfreesboro is a little further down I24 and is pretty nice, but the commute to franklin would be a hassle. and downtown is kinda far for my liking.

also, to whoever said they can't stand the south, congrats, you've stated my feelings exactly. i've lived here almost all my life and still can't stand the place. the country really does get dumber as you travel further south. i haven't been north much, but them canadians must be geniuses.

oh, and only dumbass tourists wear cowboot boots and hats.

Nah, as long as you stay away from the baptists and church of god/christ people... its all good. Sure we have some under performing school systems... but nothing that can compare to Detroit... which is pretty far north.

In a zombie apololypse... I am taking my chances with the southerners.

OP, Franklin is awesome and there is plenty to do there in terms of day to day night life. You can head down town on the weekends and its actually close enough to just pay $20 for a cab ride if you prefer. Franklin will be pretty expensive though.

Well, I suggest seeing the Robert Altman movie "Nashville." Even if you never go there. Great flick.

Nashville reminds me of lotta strip clubs....lap dances by beautiful butt ass georgeous 300lb German Frauleins........ummmmm........
