anyone from India here? or know someone there?

Has anyone ever had a relative or friend mail them food from India? Not fresh food, but like dry snacks (namkeens). I can't seem to find any companies in the US that sell a certain item (sem ka bej...from Lucknow, or U.P. area).

would a courier service do something like drop by a local store, purchase it and mail it? I can't find any that provide that level of service.

anyone have experience with import/export rules, etc? anyone have a connection in India that could do some like ship a few Kgs of it?

thanks,

ww

Which state are you in?

Usually nearby Indian stores sell them. If they don't carry it, ask them if they can order it for you. That's the best solution since they'll handle it.

Oh, and near where I'm located, Chicago has a pretty large indian market, specifically on devon street. If you can go there, just do that

I was going to suggest that as well.

Whenever my wife wants something Australian we order from SimplyOz.com

They sell Australian products, food and beverages here in the USA.

Good idea, but I've tried that before...and I've never found a place that knows about this one...most of the shops down there are Gujurati owned, and this is a U.P. thing. I even took a sample down there and asked a bunch of shops.

Do you know any in Chicago that are ran by Lucknow or Delhi people?

anyone else heard of this one? it's listed on several Indian websites:

http://www.areuhungry.com/kanwarji.htm

sometimes spelled "same ka beej" (means 'seeds of beans')

http://www.nathusweetsjkg.com/index_namkeen.htm

thanks for your suggestion, maybe I should try that again, there's always new stores popping up on Devon...

Incoming foods are a big no-no.

India groceries are full of snacks made in India and shipped here. Probably by big freight companies, not India post 🙂 I thought non perishable items were ok...maybe not.

Yes, U.P. is Uttar Pradesh, a northern state in India.

trmiv, if you can find Sem Ka Beej in Fremont, please let me know the store name, and I'll see if they accept mail orders. I'd really appreciate it.

thanks everyone for your responses....

A lot of places in LA (Artesia) sell stuff like you mention.

No

Depends on what kind of food it is but if it isn't fresh produce or meats then it's usually ok.

Dabuddha and Abhi, thanks for the offers!

as fate would have it, just this morning I found someone else willing to ship me some from New Delhi. Strange thing is, he went to one post office (smaller one) and they said they wouldn't ship it. Then to make sure, he went to downtown (uptown?) New Delhi, and they said they would ship anything except a liquid. I had another person also tell me that the post office said no.

I suspect that postal workers are the same around the world...some don't know their own rules, and some will automatically say no just because they can.

www.indiapost.org doesn't have any rules against it...heck, they'll let you ship anthrax if packed properly:

http://www.indiapost.org/Parcel.html

So he's going to try to ship it tomorrow...hope it goes through.

Hey Abhi...so they have Sem Ka Beej in Kolkata? Interesting....is there another name there? I'm wondering if stores in the US call it something else.

I really appreciate everyone's help here...and if anyone in the US finds it ...let me know!

Dhanyavaad!
