How easy is it to get a decent computer job and an apartment somewhere outside the city near a T?
true...but once you live here, everywhere else seems cheap.Originally posted by: rsd
You probably have to be more specific as to what you mean by computer job. You can get an apartment near a T, but even in the worse areas, rent is relatively high (cost of living around here is crazy).

I live 45 mins away in Manchester, NH. No T here but its a short drive less than an hour. There is Grolen here. In Cambridge there is an Online computer store. I forget what its called but they will custom build your PC and overclock it for you. And there are plenty of Defense Companies around here like Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Raytheon, BAE. And also I think Intel and ATI have some offices here.

I'm a UNIX guy... graduating with a bachelors in Computer Science plus three years experience as a sysadmin at a local (nationwide) ISP.... was looking for maybe a UNIX / programming (PHP/C/Perl,etc.) job......
If I can find something like that up in Boston I might move... I love the area.

What sucks is that you would be limited to IT jobs if you wanted a job in boston and not around.

I live in Lowell, which has a commuter rail right into North Station. Cost of living here is pretty low compared to most of the Boston area. Rents vary all over the place, tho. I got a great deal on my apt for $650/mo. including heat and hot water. My monthly expenses are around $1400 for rent, insurance (car & renter's), cable, internet, phone, electricity, gasoline, and cellphone.

Boston it self is pretty limited to business jobs. There may be a few engineering jobs here and there, but don't be to certain you can get one. If you were willing to travel to , lets say.....Woburn, there are a bunch of engineering jobs. I recommend a car for that though. You could try Cambridge, however. There are a few engineering jobs there.

Once you live in Boston, you can't go back to Lowell.....
this is from a person who has lived in Lowell for about 16 years.
