Anyone from Boston?

You probably have to be more specific as to what you mean by computer job. You can get an apartment near a T, but even in the worse areas, rent is relatively high (cost of living around here is crazy).

true...but once you live here, everywhere else seems cheap.

I live 45 mins away in Manchester, NH. No T here but its a short drive less than an hour. There is Grolen here. In Cambridge there is an Online computer store. I forget what its called but they will custom build your PC and overclock it for you. And there are plenty of Defense Companies around here like Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Raytheon, BAE. And also I think Intel and ATI have some offices here.

I'm a UNIX guy... graduating with a bachelors in Computer Science plus three years experience as a sysadmin at a local (nationwide) ISP.... was looking for maybe a UNIX / programming (PHP/C/Perl,etc.) job......

If I can find something like that up in Boston I might move... I love the area.

What sucks is that you would be limited to IT jobs if you wanted a job in boston and not around.

I live in Lowell, which has a commuter rail right into North Station. Cost of living here is pretty low compared to most of the Boston area. Rents vary all over the place, tho. I got a great deal on my apt for $650/mo. including heat and hot water. My monthly expenses are around $1400 for rent, insurance (car & renter's), cable, internet, phone, electricity, gasoline, and cellphone.

Boston it self is pretty limited to business jobs. There may be a few engineering jobs here and there, but don't be to certain you can get one. If you were willing to travel to , lets say.....Woburn, there are a bunch of engineering jobs. I recommend a car for that though. You could try Cambridge, however. There are a few engineering jobs there.

this is from a person who has lived in Lowell for about 16 years.

I think everyone on this board pays less rent than I do😉

As stated earlier, living expenses are not cheap in this area. But with a good job, that should be no problem. GOOD NEWS, the transportation system has extended and added commuter rail, so you can get to Boston from various not-so-close suberbs of Boston. As far as finding a apt. near that you are pretty much golden. Good luck searching for a job. 🙂

Yeah, I hate Lowell/Dracut.

I live down on the Cape, but I go to school in Waltham, a suburb about 10 miles west of Boston.

Based on what I have seen from friends who have gotten jobs around here in the IT industry, the market is relatively strong.

Personally I would rather work somewhere on 128 then inside downtown Boston. Here in Waltham Oracle, Symantec, Microsoft and Novel all have offices. IBM, Polaroid, and Raytheon are also local.

Oh...Newman Associates....Do NOT use them. They are terrible and they will try to stick you in Jamaica Plain even if you do not want to.
