I know it's probably bush language, but i'm just curious. It doesn't make any sense to me.

Any other strange slang from other countries? Like crikey or ah heck.

It's more "hooroo" rather than "ooroo". Yes, it does mean goodbye.

There are lots of other odd things that we say (or at least non-Australians find odd), such as "tracky dacks" (sweat pants).

Don't ever say SUV, or Sports Utility Vehicle, to an Australian. You'll get a blank look, because we have no idea what it is. Say "four wheel drive" and we will understand.

We don't throw shrimps on the barbie....it's prawn.

Another interesting thing...

Mate in austrailian is more or less "friend" as far as us "Yanks" are concerned.
But Friend there, is basically a "lover" or "Significant other".....a Mate if you will.

Did i get that right?

Nah a Mate is like a "peer".. it's also just a common way to greet someone... "how's it going mate?" :D

And a friend is exactly what a friend is in america :)

Ooroo is vintage Ozspeak for 'bye for now or see you later between friends or family - never for a formal goodbye, it's much more a throwaway said as you are actually moving off. You rarely hear it anymore except perhaps from an old bushman or from his grand daughter. A good word for signing off an email.
