Anyone from Alabama?

Platypus

Lifer
I was just made a job offer that is VERY attractive but it's in Alabama.. not to bash your state or anything but I'm used to a very midwest lifestyle and Alabama doesn't exactly scream young night life candidate to me.

Anyone familiar with this area? The only thing I know about it is that NASA is there and a few other places.. I was certainly hoping to live somewhere less conservative than Indiana and I've got two offers in Chicago already. I figured I'd give this place a shot because the price is def right etc, but I know literally nothing about the south...

Any help would be appreciated 🙂

I would find it rather amusing if you ended up down here. 😉

Alabama is not as bad as you think and Huntsville is rather nice. I'm not too familiar with the area but my friends that live there do like it.

I've traveled to HSV a couple dozen times over the years for work. It's not a typical "southern" town, as so many people there have relocated from other places.

Skoorb lived there for a while, IIRC.

If night life is the key consideration, you'll no doubt prefer Chicago just because of size.

True, I've got a feeling that the nightlife in Birmingham is a little better just based on size but Huntsville is a rather "techie" city.

I'm not a wild party hound or anything but by night life I meant something other than the local saloon 😛

I don't care if it's a techie place, that's what I am after all.

I lived in Huntsville for 14 years (now I'm at college).

It's a nice place to live, with low property taxes as a nice bonus.

Nightlife? Practically none. There aren't a lot of young adults there.

Conservative? Definately. Most of the people are WASPs, with a fairly large number of southern baptists.

All in all, it's definately not something I'd recommend for a young person, but it's a good place to live once you're married and want to start a family.

I live 30 minutes away from Huntsville. What do you want to know?

How socially conservative is the area?

Very.

Huntsville is slightly less conservative than rural towns around 'Bama, but nonetheless it is Conservative. It is more liberal and more educated than most of Alabama (Save Bham and Mobile), because it is mainly very well educated people working in Aerospace, Tech, Military, and other "attractive" jobs.

Knowing your situation, I doubt it would as good of a place as Chicago, and that hurts me to say. I really love my state, but even in the cities you will encounter a lot of bigoted or backward people.

I looked online for you first and posted this thread when you weren't on 😛

Thanks for the advice

You also need to take into account that living expenses are FAR less in Alabama than Chicago.

That's why the offer is so sweet.. it's a little bit more than I was offered in Chicago..

The housing market is fairly hot. Not as hot as California but for Alabama it is good. Huntsville is growing right now. Crime is probably better than Chicago. I think you'd make anybody anywhere unhappy with "loud as fvck" guitar playing.

Well compared with an apartment in Chicago versus a small house in Alabama I'd say the percentage of people hearing it would drop to a low number..

That would definitely be a consideration.

Just play some Freebird or Sweet Home Alabama and it'll be good. 😉
