Anyone find that the recommended dose does nothing for them?

I guess the main reason is that I'm a big guy 6'2 240 lbs. I've always noticed that whatever the medication the recommended dosage does very very little for me. I've got some sleeping pills here, over the counter, that I took a few times to get to sleep and reduce my anxiety. The recommended dose (1 pill) did absolutely nothing. I tried taking 5 pills and still only got a mild drowsiness. I'll admit I was looking to get a little tipsy on these, not hallucinate or anything just nice and mellow. But it's scary how little reaction I get from most medications. I mean how many would I need to take?

Yes. 6'1", 215 lbs and I usually take 2 or 3x the recommended dosage, depending on what it is and where it effects. You have to remember that those are worst case scenario dosages for people much smaller then you. I once had a doctor that told me medicine dosages were for 55 year old menopausal women, i.e. worst case scenario.

As far as the sleeping pills go, you probably just don't react the same as others considering you have to take that many. I get sleepy sometimes from caffeine. Try a different product.

When I went to the dentist as a kid to get my first cavity filled I had a shot of Novacaine. It did nothing.

2nd shot, nothing.

I couldn't leave because he already had a big ass hole in my tooth opened up. Can't remember if I had a 3rd shot or not, but it fucking hurt...bad.

Got gas from then on and was fine.

*Had to switch dentists, that one didn't have any gas.

A couple stiff drinks will help you go down easy and get you "a little tipsy".

I usually take double what the bottle says. I'm not exactly a big guy either so its probably like 4x the dose compared to a bigger guy.

When it comes to sleeping pills (or cold or headache medication, for that matter) I don't take one, I will take 4, or 6. Sometimes 7. Sometimes with alcohol... Because that's what works. See you all in the morning...

Did you take diphenhydramine? Try stepping it up to doxylamine succinate. It's sold as unisom sleep tablets at my local drug store. That shit's so strong, it feels like 5 diphenhydramines to me.

First...the recommended dosage is such a general "one-size-fits-all" dosage that for us bigger guys, it rarely is an effective dose. It's the same doseage recommendation for a 5'2, 100 lb. woman that it is for someone who's 6'4 and 250 lbs.
Obviously, it will work better for the little person than for the big one.

For MOST OTC pain meds, aspirin, excedrin, ibuprofen, naproxen, just about everything except tylenol, I take double the recommended dosage. Same for many "cold remedies."

I'm a big guy and I know my increased body mass requires a larger amount to get the necessary "theraputic dose" of whatever is in the pills.

I don't take the OTC sleeping pills. Don't like them, they don't work for me, and IF I had to have something to help me sleep, my doctor has "gifted" me with Lunesta samples...They help somewhat...(but I get the nastiest metallic taste in my mouth the next day, so I rarely take them)

If you're so fucked up that your anxiety keeps you from sleeping, see your doctor. Get a prescription of something that might actually help...both the anxiety and the sleeplessness.

(WTF is it with the large number of people here who have severe anxiety problems?)

I can relate.

I'm 6'3, 225 and man, I take at least double the recommended dosages. Nothing even remotely works without doing so.

These are pills. This isn't robutusin. Also over the counter medication is almost always packaged in suicide proof dosages. That is there is almost never enough medication in a box or bottle of whatever to actually OD on.

I'm sorry but there is plenty enough tylenol, aspirin etc in one bottle to kill you if you took them all at once, especially aspirin.

Not to mention the potential for severe liver damage from too much acetominophen.

We see, or used to when I worked ER and ICU, several Tylenol OD's every fall semester. Freshmen would get depressed, being away from home for the first time, find out that Mommy and Daddy wouldn't come "save them" from the "horrors" of college, and act out by taking a bottle of Tylenol. Why not? It's safe, isn't it?

We'd get them in with ultra high acetaminophen blood levels.....and the nasty treatment would begin. First, some IV treatment with acetylcysteine (usu. Parvolex) would take place, but the IV treatment carried with it its own complications, although rare, like an allergic anaphylaxis-like reaction.

After a day or two, the oral treatment would begin, typically with Mucinex. Horrible stuff. Smelled like rotten eggs and probably tasted worse. 17 doses or more with a dose every 4 hours.

Catch the OD fast enough, little to no damage would happen. Find the OD too late, and the liver would be slayed....and that was not pretty to watch. Lots of pain and the possibility of finding a donor liver is slim due to why the person needs it.....suicide attempt. That factor really puts them down on the list to get a donated organ.

Of course, this sequence always got the kid out of school and back home, if he/she survived, which most did. Sad, really.
