Anyone find that Bittorrent can effect your available bandwidth even after you turn it off?

When downloading something via Bittorret the client uses up ALL available bandwidth from my ISP to the point where any other requests like email or web surfing can't get through most of the time. I get this but I've noticed that even after I shut down the client I don't seem to have any available bandwidth for some time. Sometimes as long as 10 mins or more. Anyone else experience this?

Your NAT and state tables on the router are still full. It takes a while for them to age out. It's not bandwidth you need, it's processing/memory.

Why do you think the first thing to troubleshooting broadband internet is turn off the modem, wait at least 60 seconds and then power on? It clears every state table that is being run on your end and the other.

You could install DD-WRT (or another 3rd party firmware) on your router. You can then set it so that those tables clear faster than the default.

I installed DD-WRT on my WRT54G (v8.2) recently just to have more options for filtering traffic (for when roommates come back). So many more options for everything compared with the default firmware.

Yeah I had a feeling the answer was something like this.

bittorrent is pure hell on network devices by the very nature of the way it works. It's a resource killer.

Funny you mention that I DO have DDWRT installed. I specifically bought this router, Buffalo WHR-HP-G54, to flash it with DDWRT. I wanted DDWRT for the extra features like static DHCP leases, MAC address filtering etc etc.. and flexibility.

Are there potential downsides to setting the tables to clear faster?

Disconnecting from IM programs like AIM. From the info on that page, it said if you get disconnects from AIM (or the like), just set the number a little higher.

On v24 in the Administration tab, go to the bottom of the "management" sub tab. In the IP filter settings, you can change the TCP/UDP timeout time. Mine are set at 300s for TCP timeout and 120s UDP timeout.
