Anyone file local taxes?

edro

Lifer
I have always done a federal and state return, but have never done a local one. My roommate was like WTF mate! I have never gotten a notice or anything.

I figure I have just been breaking even all these years.

Anyone else not file a local return?

I've never heard of such a thing in the US, except for certain businesses. Hell, Nevada doesn't have State Income Tax. Bless the idiot tourists who pay our income tax for us.

Your W-2s even have a Federal, State and Local section. I have a Local Income Tax section on my W-2... WTF is that for?

That's for all the taxes your locality took out of your paycheck that you therefore don't pay federal tax on.

In MD, you file your local is part of your state returns. Each city/county has a slightly different rate, but it all goes in with the state return.

My locality doesn't take out any taxes.. neither does my state.. i've never done a state tax return even though I "should". I guess I could get in trouble for not filing a return, but my residency is really messed up because of the military anyways.

Heck, the federal government isn't even taxing me right now 🙂

State revenue divisions will take care of the local tax distribution for you. You will pay it with part of your state income taxes if required.

some cities have a local tax, you might need to ask at a tax preperation service, they do city returns
