I'm getting my information mainly from this matrix: Compare MSDN Subscriptions

Our department is interested in getting Visual Studio with MSDN Subscriptions and we are getting a bit confused on the Visual Studio side. We're a team of 4 software developers who would like to buy the proper tools.

As I understand it, Visual SourceSafe has been replaced with Team Foundation Server. And the Visual Studio edition included with the Software Developer subscription is Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Software Developers. To dumb things down, I *think* the VS 2005 Team Edition for Software Developers is a client and we still need a server, which would be the Team Foundation Server for us to use the newer source controls.

Does VS 2005 Team Edition for Software Developers include Team Foundation Server?

Does Team Suite (not Team Edition), include Team Foundation Server? If so, can we legally buy one subscription of Team Suite which includes Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite and have the rest use Software Developer edition to connect to it?

Or do all the developers need the Team Suite edition to use Team Foundation Server?

Place a phone call to the local MS tech support center for proper clarification.

The sales people will try to sell you a dumptruck to move a sandbox full of dirt.
Tech people will tell you what you actually need to fit your requirements.
