My girlfriend and I are planning on taking a vacation up in South Carolina in late May. The hotel we found that is somewhat centrally located is located about a mile from Clemson University. I just wanted to make sure thats a decent area and all. If its anything like the area around the University of South Florida we may want to look at something a little further away to get a bit nicer area.

So who knows?

It's been a few years, but it's just kinda the middle of nowhere. Nothing slummy or anything, just kinda a small place on the side of the road. The kind where you find a Amerisuites or a Courtyard by Mariott next to a Cracker Barrel.

If you drive up the road to Greenville (an additional 20 minutes), you might be able to find something fairly nice -- although probably $100 - $120 a night downtown. Still, downtown Greenville is really nice--good restaurants (fairly cheap), lots of walking, small little stores--the places girls seem to love--some ice cream places, and a few bars (generally nowhere near as nice as the restaurants/restaurant bars).

Is this college trip/meet up with friends and drink beer, or enjoy the scenery trip? You might also consider heading up to Ashville--another kinda small town, and the Biltmore House, is nice, but fairly expensive. Any questions--especially about places in downtown Greenville--let me know.

Thanks for the reply. I don't know anyone in S.C. We are planning on going white water rafting, hiking and then just spending a few days doing whatever we find enjoyable. Its just a vacation and neither of us has ever been to S.C. Just seemed like a cool place to go :)

Any tips on places to visit lemme know.

Gotcha. Northern South Carolina can be pretty nice--two places that seem to be pretty popular for camping/hiking: one's called Table Rock (definitely good for day hike areas) and the other is Pretty Place (that one has a chapel built that's pretty popular for weddings. Absolutely wonderful for watching the sun rise--if you're up that early that is!). I would definitely check out downtown Greenville, though.

Also in Greenville:

The Furman University campus is also pretty good--always tends to win national awards for landscaping and such--there's a nice big lake that you can walk around, with lots of swans and ducks. Lots of locals bring picknick lunches and sit outside around the lake to eat them.

And if you feel like doing something particularly odd, there's the art museum at Bob Jones University--world's best collection of Rembrant's in a small, *extremely* conservative South Carolina school....

Enjoy :)

There's also the BMW "Zentrum", a BMW history museum in Spartanburg. It's really cool. They also give BMW factory tours. That place is really interesting.

Artisphere is an annual art festival Greenville has coming up too. I'll check the dates on that for you if you like.

This is the website for a local free weekly rag targeted towards 20/30 somethings and is usually a good guide for what's going on in the area.

Hit up Pablo too, I know he's in the area. Maybe he can give you some more ideas.

I graduated from Clemson a couple years ago. If all you're worried about is if your hotel is in a decent area, you shouldn't have any problems. Clemson (both town and campus) are pretty safe places. I wish I could be more help with things to do in the area but I think you're on the right track if you're going to be doing rafting. I'm sure there's biking and hiking and all that sort of stuff in the area. I didn't really do any of that sort of stuff while I was at school and it's been several years since I've even been in town (gotta get back up there sometime soonlike, though).

Are you doing the Chattooga River? I hope you're not wasting your time on Section 3. Even Section 4 is a bit lame at times (though beautiful) but fun as heck at the end. I would recommend you trek over to Tennessee, probably an hour and a half or so, and do the Ocoee. It's a blast.

We are first timers. We don't want to bite off more than we can chew, ya know? I'll find out exactly which one it is later, my g/f is the one who made the reservations.

I have family all up in that area.
PM me for phone numbers , references, etc.

The BMW zentrum is cool, Hartwell lake is huge and has great boating, etc. For Kayaking there's another lake up the road a bit that my cousin likes.
For real "Southern Cooking" you've got to check out Swamp Guinea in Georgia, about a 30 minute drive out on Hiway 51 east at New Creek Road. Catfish, Perch, Shrimp, Hush Puppies,,,mmmmmmmmm Thats good eatin < / Andy Griffith>
Clemson is actually a pretty upscale area.
Greenville is OK, a little larger than the Anderson / Clemson . But heck, it's all the same afaik.
