they're my medical school alma mater, and are ranked top 20 in the country in terms of medicine, but i don't know too much about the rest of the grad programs.
in general, for being one of the oldest schools in the nation, pittsburgh still has a pretty poor reputation as an elite academic school. their undergraduate program is unremarkable, and their undergrads in my dealings never struck me as intelligent or really very thoughtful. possibly because carnegie mellon is down the street and the general tone there is much more academic and research oriented and IMHO the students study harder. for undergrad, i think pitt's a pretty standard state school which really should be much better than it is now for how long they've been around, but i'm sure they have some particular graduate programs which stand out which may or may not include information science. i do know the weather sucked there, but i'm a southern california native.
as a side note, i also graduated from UCLA so this weekend's game should be particularly interesting, especially since they stole howland away while i was in pittsburgh. go bruins!
