I may have an opportunity in the near future to pick up a 1992 Nissan 240sx for free save for the fact that it has been sitting for 3 years and does not start up now (obviously)

Belongs to a co-worker's family and according to him it was running fine until they stopped driving it and let it sit so he assumes that fluids need to be switched out and hoses need to be replaced but other than that should be in good shape.

I was thinking of picking up it to be a project car but worried that I may be getting in over my head. Anyone have any experience working with these cars and anything in particular that I should look out for that can turn an relatively simple project into a massive nightmare?

Free is free. Drain the gas tank, get new gas in there. Drain all other fluids, etc. Usually all 240sx that show up on CL are thrashed so you're lucky if the car is unmolested

I recently sold my own 1990 240SX coupe that I had for over 12 years. The engine on these cars are bullet proof; I had 265k miles on mine before I sold it. The car is easy to fix if you want to do stuff yourself. Like the others said, drain gas tank and other fluids and restock.
It depends on how handy you are or want to be. If you are willing to put up with a project car that you intend on getting up and running, it's worth a try. Lots of enthusiasts for this car are out there. I sold my car for more than I bought it even after 12 years of use.

I owned a 92 since they were new. I would drain fuel and oil. Is this a stick? Check radiator fluid or change. They are really not bullet proof motor but they are good motor. Check the hoses.

Yup, 5 speed, red. As far as I know, not modified as it was a 'family' car. Hopefully worse case scenario, I can bring it back to running condition and maybe sell if off later on for something else.

One more thing that he mentioned was that it was a smoker's car. Does anyone know how hard it is to get the smell out? It's been sitting around for about 3 years so I don't know how bad it is yet but I'm guessing with some work you can clean out the smell?
