Anyone familiar with making silk screened t-shirts?

I had a question about how some t-shirt designers get actual pictures to come out on a t-shirt?

It doesn't seem to be silk screened since there are multiple layers and I would imagine doing a silk screen of each layer would be insanely expensive and time consuming. Is there another method that t-shirt manufacturers use to get an actual picture onto a t-shirt?

I want to take one of those lulz pictures and put it onto a shirt. I really want to take the special olympics/arguing picture and make that into a shirt. Any idea how I can accomplish that?

spreadshirt, customink, cafepress.com all are good. i prefer spreadshirt the most.

when in doubt outsource.

You can try an iron on for like $5-10 or buy a custom printed shirt for $10-30 depending on how much color and quantity you want. All the major printer manufactuers make iron ons and you can just google for the cheapest screener.

I've made several shirts with pics I've found on the Internet and just used white or colored shirt iron-on transfers you can find at Wal-Mart. The transfers for white/light color shirts last longer but both are pretty good.

If it is multiple colors it is most likely not silk screened, as that is a pain in the ass to do on T-shirts. You'd have to burn a screen for each individual color, and hope it lines up.

I work for a silk screening company! It sure helps to have an automated press and a screen for each color. We mainly use spot colors for separations, and make a silk screen for each color. We can do full color prints too, which requires some software to separate each of the colors. One of my co-workers does that, using ColorCrunch?
