Symptoms:

1. DSL connection works fine (online right now)
2. Telephone works fine when run without a filter (straight into the jack)
3. Telephone only emits some weird high-pitched sound when plugged into the filtered line on one of the DSL filters provided by my ISP.
4. ISP says there's not a problem on their end, likewise with the telco.
5. I've tried multiple jacks, using different filters (i have 4 or 5 filters).
6. My phoneline extensions were all just twisted, soldered and taped. I cut them all and redid it using a proper block and punching them on.

What the heck? Anyone ever have it happen where the telephone would work, but not when run through a DSL filter?

DSL in line filters typically have 2 RJ-11 jacks on them
One jack passes the DSL Signal and not the VOICE
The other jack passes the Voice Signal and not the DSL Signal

The telephone MUST be plugged into the Voice Jack
Also the DSL Modem should not be connected thru any filter to the phone line

Telephone is plugged into the voice jack and it does not work.

Telephone plugged straight into the extension jack works fine though.
Interestingly phone plugged into the unfiltered RJ11 plug on the filter works fine too.

DSL is plugged straight into the wall (unfiltered phone jack).

Try reversing the filter...i.e. turn it around and plug it in to the other side of the filter.

So, it appears to be my Telco's problem. I've taken everything that's in my house off of the phone system, and connected a telephone, using a filter, manually to the wires where they first come into my house. Still a problem, so it must be something outside of the house. I guess I'll give them a call again and let them know.
