Im taking a class titled Eastern Spirituality. Right now we are studying Taoism. Anyway, we watched a video about Chinese medicine and practices in class today. It had a segment of this Tai Chi master who was able to push people away without even moving his arm. He just kind of touched the other people's hand or shoulder or back and made them fall backwards or drop to their knees. It was amazing.

Anyway, he said that he was just focusing his "chi" out of his body into the body of other people. The people he teaches have to make a 3 year commitment to show that they are serious about learning from him. I thought this was really interesting

Anyone experience or see the powers of the chi? This is awesome stuff

Yeah, I have. In street figher, Ryu focuses his chi to throw a fireball. That counts, right?

My father talks a lot about that.. about how the grandmaster of some sorts can just not even touch you but you'll fall back. I'm guessing it was special effects though.

Chi comes in many forms, including heart burn, aka "fire chi".

Which I get all the time....

yea the tao te ching is great.

Chapter 27:
What is a good man but a bad man's teacher?
What is a bad man but a good man's job?
If you don't understand this, you will get lost,
however intelligent you are.
It is the great secret

I'm not to sure about stuff like chi, it seems so mystical as to defy physics (hehehe). Though eastern philosphy is so adamant about its existence. I think the effect the volunteer exhibits is psychosomatic. Were the people in the video students of the master by chance?

Well there are those buddhist priest or monks who can camp out in freezing temperatures and not even get cold.

I'm not so sure about all the body energy stuff though.

I agree. Last year i had 6 months of Shiatsu (japanese massage) class and for 3 nights a week we would meditate and focus on our KI. I never felt a thing. Sometimes i thought i did but after i thought about it i think it was the suggestive thought our instructor was giving us.

Nope, I don't think it exists.

If *anybody* claims to have it and cares to demonstrate their powers of chi under controlled double-blind scientific tests, they can become ONE MILLION DOLLARS richer by taking the JREF challenge

JREF homepage here

THe challenge is real, Mr. Randi is real, the money is real, and I can state for real that NO ONE has passed even a preliminary test.

It is kind of hard for me to think that qi does not exist after watching that video. The majority of medical practices in China are just "qi" therapies and people feel better and have shown signs of improvement (shrinking tumors, pain reduction, etc). I'd like to see this type of thing in person, though.

Qi exists, just not in the mystic power way that some of these "grandmasters" say it does. Qi is simply life energy... humans have a metabolism, create energy, have electrical impulses in our brains, give off heat energy... these could all be considered qi. Can it be focused? Sure. Do I believe in no-touchy knockouts, and people getting flung through walls by "qi"? No way. There are very scientific reasons for why some of these "qi" techniques are so effortless, and it has little to do with qi. That said, the evidence that qi can shrink tumors can be explained in that perhaps the electrical impulses in the body can be transferred to another through contact, and though it is only a small charge it is enough to have some effect.

The push people away thing is totally power of suggestion. I've had it done to me before, and its a parlor trick, among a dozen other ones. Funny story about that actually, me and a bunch of people from karate went to a chinese restaurant to eat, and I was wearing a t'ai chi shirt. One of the waiters came over and was like "You know t'ai chi???" and brought us into a conference area to basically show off his skills, and he was attempting to do some of the parlor tricks. Because I knew how they work, they didn't work on me... which he responded with "wow, your qi must be highly developed!"
