Anyone here ever have a kitchen renovation (or any major room renovation for that matter) done by Home Depot? Did it go smoothly or did you have problems? I've heard mixed stories about it and wanted to see if anyone here had any experience with them. TIA.

I knew someone who had them install carpeting - they are in the process of getting their money back because home depot used crappy contractors.

My neighbor hired Home Depot contractors to remodel their kitchen. MAny months later, they finally got their money back and paid someone reputable to do it right. STAY AWAY from store contractors!!

They use local contractors/businesses to do the installs.

You can have problems just like you can using any contractor. It is a major project. The one benefit with using Home Depot, is they guarantee the work.

There was a local contactor (not one used by Home Depot) out here who filed bankrupcy and I spoke to several people who lost the money they paid for their kitchen remodel (one lost about $8000.00).

At least with Home Depot you know that won't happen.

The people who seem to have the most problems that I have dealt with are people who are told what is going to happen and how it works. They sign a lot of paperwork further explaining all of these things, but claim ignorance when they are reminded of how things work.

The biggest complaints are:

-A cabinet that comes in damaged from the company (cabinets are shipped directly from the manufactuer to the customers house). The installers come out and inspect the cabinets when they arrive so if one is damaged they can get it reordered as to not delay the intall. Most customers don't want to inspect the cabinets with the installer and just sign off on a form saying that they accept the condition of the cabinets (why a person spending that amount of money would not look them over is beyond me).

-A person who is trying to have a install completed right before a major party or get together.

-A person not wanting to be there during the install (someone 18+ must be there at all times for insurance).

I'd use them only for small jobs I won't do. Gutters, maybe replacing heating ducts, wood fences.

My sister had them do countertops at her new house. They were the only local people she could find who had the product she wanted.

My sister rejected one section they brought out, had a manufacturing defect in it, the installer agreed with her and Home Depot had to order another section. Delayed the project a few weeks, but since it was new construction, she wasnt faced with a torn-up kitchen the whole time.

She was basically pretty happy with the work they did and how they handles the problem.
