Signal Booster is an Amplifier that Boost the Output of a Wireless unit.

The item you refer to is a Home made Directional Antenna.

If you do it correct it would concentrate the Wireless Signal into one Direction thus makes it more potent in this specific Direction.

Out door it can have Huge effect on the distance. In door it would be very limited.

Few ideas for Indoor here: Extending the Distance of Entry Level Wireless Network.

well... i was hoping to find a cheap/free way to extend my wireless network.

Do you think rubber banding a fork, or knife or metal pipe (etc) to my wireless antenna would boost the signal? I dont want to have to get a repeater when I already get a signal (even though it is a weak signal). Just trying to find cheap/free ways to amplify it.

lol, no thats not going to help.... build a better antenna, should help... but build it to te proper specs, the physics of antennas is easily found on the internet, you'll just to make it out of the proper materials of the proper size and lengths. Your looking to make a collinear antenna for 2400-2500 MHz.

You're doing it the wrong way. You need something like this on the clients, not the router.

If you put it on the router you'll have to have all the clients in the same line so they can see the signal.

This is why they are using a USB wireless card, so they can put the card in the focal point of the antenna, then point the antenna at the source. If you do it that way you WILL boost your gain, even through walls.

you can mod either or both sides, it will all help. If you make a high gain omni directional antenna and put it on the AP then you won't have to lug crap around with your lappy.
