Well, my old POS one is dead...

I turned it on the other day...it just hummed, then started pouring out the worst smelling smoke I have ever smelled.

It looks fairly easy to change...seems to just drop down from the sink, and you need to make the electrical connection.

Anyone ever done this?

Update:

Got the new one installed today...was a snap with the mounting ring system.

Before

Old vs New

Installed

Took about a hour, but I took my time. I left the dishwasher drain line off since I don't use it, and haven't in like 4 years or so. The new one comes with that connection plugged, so I didn't have to mess with anything.

:)

I did this once b/c mine also died. Mine connected with a plug that was under the sink so it was pretty easy to plug in, attach and get started. The only part I had trouble with was an overflow thing above the second sink (I didn't notice how that was hooked up) After I fixed that I was fine.

Yea, if you already have one installed it should be a snap. Just make sure you get the same size so you don't have to deal with cutting pipe.

Thanks. Yeah, I have a dishwasher here that is setup to drain into the disposal, but I haven't used it in like 3 years, so I prolly won't even hook that up...

I can't tell if mine has a plug, it just has some standard romex cable going from the switch under the sink to it in the back...

I'm comfortable with wiring, so that's not a problem...

There just isn't much room under there for a big guy like me...

Cutting pipe?

I have a el-cheeso 1/3HP in there now...I was going to put in a 3/4HP unit...looks about the same size...might be a bit bigger though. What pipe would I need to cut?

If it fits the flange thing already on the sink, you don't have to cut anything. I upped the HP and didn't change the flange.

Most of them have a universal clamp that connects it to the sink from the bottom. If you get the same kind, all you have to do is discconect the electrical and turn the big-ass screw and it pops right off. Then screw the new one on and hoook it back up. It's really simple. We did ours a few months ago.

I have done it. It's easssy! If it's a good one then you will have to take a flat head screwdriver and loosen a metal clip/ring to get it to drop down.

I have been told by a plumber friend that those are the best kind so you should replace it with that kind.

Looks like all you have to do is disconnect hoses/wires, unscrew. Reconnect hoses/wires to new one (either one will work) and re-attach. About a 15 minute job. I don't see any reason to spend the extra for the 3/4 HP. But I'd probably buy that one anyway.

Yeah, I'm mainly buying it for the extra warranty...

The condo I live in is owned by a family member who rents it out to me, so I'm not paying for it anyhow. I'm going to put it in as a favor rather than pay someone to do it...

Thanks!

Just got back from Homo Depot...heh.

Picked up the 444 3/4 HP model...

The Badger 5 Plus 5/8HP model has been replaced in store with a 3/4HP Badger 5 "XP"...

I almost got it since it was also a 3/4HP motor...but the 444 has sound deadening, which the Badger models do not have...

Oh, and they were much bigger in person...the step up from the 444, the 555SS was almost the size of a propane tank on a gas grill!

Hopefully all goes well...

Ahh..thanks for the suggestion but that was how it was before, and it's how the stupid Canadian company that built these places did it... :

All the stuff I change out in the house is written in french...these places are pre-fabs from teh land of teh cannucks.

Thanks for the tip though.

That pic is a bit deceiving too because the cord that comes from the wall goes to a switch, then another comes out of the switch to the disposal...

Yeah, the mounting ring system makes it a snap. If I replaced the collar in the sink though, it would slightly more involved...

One other thing...the stuff in that drain pipe is NASTY. I scraped some up and made pudding... :Q:frown:

;)
