well, ive always been a very nervous person. i always thought it was natural because i would get especially nervous before performances, tests, etc. and i know that's natural. but in recent times ive felt that getting worse, and it's been getting harder for me to deal with worries. nowadays im having trouble sleeping on many nights because im always thinking about things that make me nervous, im constantly sweating in my palms, and my heartrate is always really high. mind you, im pretty fit so its not because of high blood pressure/cholestrol or anything. its just that i get really tense and nervous, even when im at home.

so i went to the doc just for some other general stuff and i just decided to ask about my nervousness. i described my symptons to her and she asked me some questions and said i might have general anxiety disorder. she said i can wait a few days and see if i feel better, or if not, i can call her and she can refer me to the psychiatrist or counselor.

so im wondering, she told me a lot of people suffer from this disorder and she said its actually something they diagnose. so i was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and how they dealt with it.

Dude, you're like 15... Just get some meds like everyone else your age :)

Maybe you're just experiencing normal stresses of high school and adolescence?

i do!
well, my suggestion is to go and get a refferal.
at the very least go and talk to someone in the field, that in itself may help. if you are comfortable with it, regular therapy sessions tend to help a general sort of "floating anxiety" and trust me, drugs designed for this are easier to score than most illegal substances. again, if you are comfortable with taking medication.
but definatly go and talk to someone. there are tons of sites online that also give good tips for people who are not really into the therapy/drug treatments.
i remember one tip (which a friend and i both have used) which is to give a name to the sort of random anxiety that is "attacking" you. that way, it has an identity and it is easier to deal with. my friend and i called ours "ANXIETOR!"
its stupid but it helped. especially becuase it was such a dumb name.

oh yea, social anxiety disorder. she talked about that too. she said anxiety usually doesn't afflict people young like me (16). but i still do all the activities i would want to, i play on the basketball team, i run track, i play in the orchestra, i do clubs, and i go out, but its more of a nervousness (obsession with nervous thoughts maybe?). like racing heartbeats and for me, trembling hands. she said anxiety is normal but for me its constant (like even right now) it just escalates to a point in which i can hear and feel my heartbeat during and before events.

its summer right now too, so there's no school or anything. i guess its more discomfort than anything, i try not to let it affect what i want to do. but it really does make me lose sleep and energy, and makes it hard to concentrate on things.

EDIT: Oh yea, the other thing is, it might be just in my family. my brother had severe OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) in college to a point in which he had to stay in the hospital overnight once. he's completely normal now, but there was a period in which he had a lot of therapy. he washed his hands until they bled i think. its supposedly in the same "psychological" group as anxiety.

Anxiety problems are becoming more and more common. (I have problems with it as well). It's obvious that many of them are the result of the society and culture we live in but, rather than try and fix the core problems, most people would rather prescribe and take pills. So, get yourself some 'happy' pills and pretend life is peachy keen and there's nothing wrong with the idea of taking drugs to be happy.

Some amount of anxiety is perfectly normal. Im sure many of us here have experienced these same feelings you are having. I know I have. And I still do. Its natural......

Life is not fair nor easy and it get alot fvcking harder the older you get. You can very likely manage without drugs. Talking to someone will certainly help you .....

edit: without prescription drugs ;):p

well...there are two doctors to go to:
1. therapist. this person can help you and CAN NOT give you medicine. this, i think, should be the first thing you try.
if you wish
2. psychiatrist. this person can (and probably will) give you medicine. basically, this person is the drug dealer. the important thing to note is that EVERYONE BUT YOU will be aware of that from the get go. if you ask to see one, you are basically asking for medicine. however, if you make it clear you are not comfortable with that, then you should be ok.

of course, these are generalizations. but good #2s can be hard to find.

How about some reading?

I highly recommend getting a bit of Mindfulness into your everyday life.

Peace is Every Step by Tich Nhat Hanh is a great book.

I have Panic Disorder. Its Generalized Anxiety Disorder X 100 :p

You should try and get therapy first and hopefully it helps you. I would definetly try that before going on any pills. For me, therapy didn't help and I ended up going on medication. It runs in my family :(

Good luck to you. I know anxiety and nervousness svck. Hopefully therapy will help. Cognitive-Behavior Therapy is supposed to work very well for some people.

I have some type of anxiety or panic disorder. I have went to the docs for it, and all they do is medicate me. They wanted me to go to a therapyst, but there is no way I could do that.

So now I just deal with it. I have panic attacks about once a week. I cant stand being in crowded areas. All sorts of different things make me more nervous than I know how to deal with.

It sucks, but it passes.

I've got it. Was REALLY bad year ago. So bad I couldn't work or do anything with friends. I couldn't drive in a car with another person. It's better now but I still have some bad times.

All of the advice given so far seems right on target. Additionally, one needs to make time in their day to properly relax. Sorry, but sitting in front of the TV isn't the kind of relaxation that one needs. The type of relaxation that I'm talking about could be meditation or just spending time in a quiet place - with no distractions. Relaxation coupled with therapy and possibly meds will do wonders for most people with anxiety issues.
