Anyone ever "stealth" a floppy drive?

Anyone ever "stealth" a floppy drive? I ordered a shuttle xpc and im going to be putting it all togather next week when it arives...i was just thinking mabey i will stealth the cdrom drive (shouldnt be too hard) But is there a way to stealth the floppy disk drive since i dont really use it that much, and i want a cool streamline sleeek look. I was thinkin that take the cover of the 3.5inch port and glue in some kinda dummy floppy and slip it in there...if u press on it then it will hit the eject button or something...i duno yet, when i get it im definatly going to try something. but yeah I WANT THE FLOPPY DRIVE IN THERE so im not just going to take it out like most people.

you could make some sort of floppy cover you can flip open if needed...some sort of hinge type thing maybe? Just an idea to get you stared.

actually, with a small enough hinge that might just work...then you'd just have to find a way to keep it shut. I don't think magnets would be the way to go for a floppy 🙂.
However, given how often floppies are used nowadays, you could make it so you could only use it from the inside (or only pop the cover off that ay), since its use will likely be so rare.
Edit: if you got it swinging out sideways intead of up, it'd be easier to find something to keep it shut, though I still don't know what you would use.

I don't think small magnets would be too big a problem. All the sony cases with flip out drive covers (including the floppy one) use magnets to keep the cover in place.

Well then, cut fridge magnets and there you go. If there's enough room to put your fingernail in and open it, you're set.

here's an idea, you could use the spring out of a inkpin. just attach one end to the metal case and glue the other using a gluegun or superglue. if the spring is too strong, im sure that a craft store(yea yea, craftstores are for women, but if you're a hardcore CaseModer than craftstores are like your second home, and hey! not a bad place to pick up women!!) might have something for you. just look around, maybe a better idea might cum about in there.. heh 😉

Ahh, Ya beat me to the punch with that one. Although, Instead of putting behind the couch, They are also usefull for holding up the couch if you should happen to be missing a leg. 😉

i killed a floppy trying....

the hinge method can work it's just got a few engineering hurdles. your best bet is to just have a removable faceplate so you can hide the floppy rather then stealth it.(a mechanical eject is just very difficult)

check this...

my stealth DVD/CDRW works great. i killed a old 6x cdrom experimenting. after the first death i had a new improved method. this worked first try and was non destructive🙂

i shortened the screws and then screwed the clear plate and paper to a flat 2mm thick piece of plastic.(a modified 5.25 case blank) i then used velcro to attach the stealth front to the drive door. this allows ample movement and makes the button easier pressed. i then glued a small piece of plastic right where the eject button was to bridge the gap.(i tweak this in the video) i had to set the drive back slightly due to the thickness of the stealth cover. rather then drive new holes in the aluminum cage, i used a "L" shaped piece of plastic(same piece thats used in the eject button) to prevent the drive from pushing back into the case.

one thing to worry about. drive length, the smasung DVD/CDRW i got was abnormally short. this is a very good thing for modding in a XPC. if i would have attempted this with my plextor CDR or CDROM i would have ~2 inches of clearence to the heatpipe.

Thanks for the tips guys, for some odd reason i refuse to get rid of the floppy completly, mabey its just the challenge and the fun of it....i thought about a usb floppy but i thought it wouldnt hurt to atleast try with the ide floppy that i already got... thx for the ideas, i cant wait till i get my shuttle so i can start.
