I'm wanting to get rid of my Ikea desk. I have a big Galant series desk, corner shape with the extra wings to make it omg huge and long. I loved it when I was really into playing PC games and having 3 monitors on my desk plus an HDTV, now all I care about is my Xbox so I can watch Netflix and Hulu and this monstrosity is a giant space hog.

I'm wondering what the depreciation on them is? If there are any reputable sites to sell them on? Anyone here want it? D:

I don't want to just craigs list it if I can avoid it. I also don't know if these things hold any value or if I'll just end up giving it away vs what I paid (around $400).

Why would it hold value??

Wouldn't someone rather buy a new one than a used one? Not like they are collectors items.

I would guess that you might be able to get half what you paid for it.

the funny thing, there is essentially zero depreciation. at least, a small amount. People seem to think, for some reason, that Ikea has some sort of quality attached to it. It's nothing but cheap boxed furniture, like you get from Target, but people on CL will pay waaaaay too much for it.

You can probably sell it for 80% of the original purchase price, if it isn't damaged. Hell, I've purchased cheap Ikea shelves off of CL while in Chicago ($20), then in Berkeley, 3 years later, sold them on CL for $40.

boom.

uh, and why not Crag's List? it's the only real option.

There are a LOT of Galant desks on Craigslist, probably because they're so popular. They hold at least half their value if you can find someone who wants it.

I managed to sell 2 Vika desks for ~30% of their buy value. Had to dump a week or two table cause I just didn't like it for less than half though.

Also, the table top itself might not be worth much, but the frame and legs are. The tops you can get in the as-as section of Ikea "new", maybe slightly scuffed, for cheap. But the legs are completely re-usable, and work with all options.

I had a larger rectangular Galant desk that I bought for $180. I sold it a few years later for $100. I didn't even have to take it apart.

I bought a bookshelf there once for $20. Re-sold it years later for $20.

Some people are just really stupid.

I bought Dell LCD for $200 and sold it a year later for $250. It was selling for $150 at that point.

I was in no rush to sell it so I posted it on Craigslist for $300 and got an offer for $250. I kinda felt bad about it afterward.

problem is wear and tear on a veneer wood desk/furniture is pretty harsh, real wood can sometimes wear in ways that is aesthetically pleasant, particle board just looks ratty pretty quick. theres the ick factor as well
and of course transporting a desk is a pain, limiting buyer pool even more

so the price alone has to sell it
chop half off the price and start there. be extremely honest in the pics and description about any wear and tear and buyers will have more trust in going for it.

sold a new in box 6 drawer hemnes(?) chest from ikea not so long ago. was a gift and i didn't want it. sold it for about 70% of the new price from their website, and the woman who took a cab here and back to buy it, carry the 2 insanely heavy boxes to the cab, etc., asked me why i was selling it soooo cheap. o_O

there are a lot of stupid and/or crazy people out there. don't forget, a 100 IQ is supposed to be the average. yes, scary.

now that i think about it, i actually had a bunch of emails for it on the first day, with people (mostly women) begging me to sell it to them. i held it for the first lady that contacted me. it was the easiest and fastest sale ever for me on craigslist.

The Ikea Galant desk actually wears quite well. The only problem mine had after a few years was a few small dents.

I sold all my Ikea furniture (which I had acquired from others when I moved off campus) when I left Chicago. Easy to do though when you're selling to other college students. Most of my stuff sold for a good price - at least at the level I initially purchased it at (which was probably 50% of retail).
