Anyone ever seen a Tornado

Any of you ever seen a tornado, not on TV but like for real.

I never seen one but we did have a rare occurrence a few years back here in long island NY, on labor day at work (country club) we were having a carnival and the sky just turned black/green colored and the wind started to pick up and all sudden the carnival tents end it up in the bay and we lost about 14 tree's in the golf course, there was some damage in about three towns. They said probably a tornado did touch down and we just got the tail end of it.

I live in Illinois, and I've seen one from a few miles away. Sometimes I have nightmares about tornadoes.

Never seen a Tornado in person, but I have seen several water spouts, does that count?
I would like to see at least one in person at some point though, just hopefully not too up close and personal.

i was at the US Open a few years back, and a tiny tiny tornado touched down for all of about 15 seconds. it was wicked.

Yes - I've seem many - I lived in South Dakota for a few years - nothing like looking out your back window and seeing one headed your way :Q Here in FL - I've seen quite a few waterspouts too during Hurricanes.

I saw one from a distance. Very scary and very cool. It was hypnotic - I couldn't do anything but stare at it.

I have seen water spouts over the lake (lake erie) during storms.

Very cool, but i got the hell outta there real damn quick.

I was in Florida last week, and one touched down about a mile from where I was staying. I didn't get to see it though.

I saw a twister forming once, but that's it. It was during a pretty nasty thunderstorm, and I saw these clouds starting to twist and grow downwards. Didn't really expect it to be a twister, but found out later that one had touched down in town.

We don't get many tornado's in my area of FL, except during hurricane season when the storms blow through, and then we are all hunkered down in our homes with the shutters in place so if we do see one it's probably as it's sucking your roof away... yikes.

That said, I was in Michigan last year on a business trip. Had landed at the small airport outside of Detroit and was working my way to the hotel. It was about 2pm and I hadn't eaten lunch so I pulled into a diner (Big Boy's). I had just ordered my meal and the rain started, about 5 minutes later the manager told us we should all move to the back of the restaurant (away from the windows) as a tornado was coming through the area. It wasn't crowded so we all moved to some open booths further away.

The rain really started beating down, and then hail was falling, etc. Got really nasty. And as quick as it came it was over, no damage to the restaurant but the parking lot was flooded afterwards. My rental was in a low area and the water was up to the wheel hubs. I wasn't in a hurry so I waited for the water to drain down, took about 30 minutes. I drove away and there were some very large trees downed in multiple places nearby (1/4 mile away from restaurant), lots of flooding still, etc.

On another trip to the same area a flight was delayed because the inbound flight had to turn back when there was a tornado warning near the airport. Didn't see any effects of that, other than a couple hour wait for the next flight.

i could have last year, but i was hiding in the basement with the kids
a house 1/4 mile away was dumped off its foundation

I wonder if there is a way to stop a tornado, say shoot a missle at the storm cell above the tornado, not directly at it.

Maybe a nuclear one, so it can throw radioactive debris everywhere....

There is no stopping them once they have formed, and I don't think the technology is there to keep the favorable conditions from forming that spawn them. Bottom line is Mother Nature > man
