Anyone ever repair a porcelain sink?

My kids dropped something heavy in a sink and broke a huge chunk out. The sink is quite expensive so replacing it for the kind of damage done isn't really an option.

Has anyone ever repaired a porcelain sink? How did it the repairwork look?

Thanks.

If you have the chunk, you can fix it with some epoxy. If you are very careful about lining everything up, you will only notice a hairline (or smaller) crack around the perimiter of the chunk. I have done this with porcelain plates and bowls, but not with sinks.

I just remodeled my bathroom, and I can tell you that porcelain sinks like that can cost several hundred dollars and approach a thousand dollars.

Its a Duravit Happy D series sink with Hans Grohe fixtures.

Cost me $600 for the sink alone.

All from Germany. Much better than Kohler crap.

I say Kohler crap because my last place I put Kohler plumbing in and within 1 or 2 months some stupid shower valve failed, flooded my new bathroom and caused about $1,500 in damage because I had to tear down a newly tiled wall to get at it. So no, I probably didn't save money.

It just looks like a sink you'd see in a gas station bathroom... is all.

How old are you guys? Have you ever owned your own house? I take it you haven't since you don't seem to realize putting nice fixtures into a house will raise the price of the house above what you put in.

Do you guys have anything constructive to add?

Yeah, that chipped sink could use a good washing.

I second this. Do you have the piece that came off?

I've repaired my tub using clear silcone. It doesn't look all that great...but it keeps the tub (porcelain) from leaking.

Constructive:
It would cost more to repair (to invisability) then the $600 for a new one. To repair it correctly, it would need to be blasted, filled, reglazed and fired. You can fill it with epoxy, but no matter what you do, you will be able to see it with no problem.

I used to sell sinks, fixtures, and entire kitchens, and kohler fixtures are at the low end as you say. I hate to say it but a sink is not a fixture. and if you are buying fixtures to raise the value of your home, you have the absolute wrong mindset. You buy fixtures for you, not the next owner or for resale value. Hans Grohe are damn nice, but buying a set isn't going to raise the resale value of your home at all unless you find exactly the right buyer

If you are concerned with resale, the money would be better spent on a new front door, or windows, or 1/3 of a roof.

Also, if you have kids, they will break things. Expecialy breakable things like porcelain.
