Our two-year family plan contract just expired. Lucky me as my phone has been broken for the last two weeks. We have three phones and one was recently added and is ineligible for upgrade. I expect to walk in, sign a new contract and get handed two new barebones nokia's for free. Of the two phones up for upgrade, my brother won't want to swap his and he nor his phone will be present, but they should still hand me the two phones, right?

If anyone has experience with this, please share :)

I don't plan on ever going back to Cingular again. My contract expires in Dec and I hate to jump ship from GSM but dang it, they need to get their act together. I will switch to the evil CDMA :(

I hope that's what they have. 611 told me to go to a cingular corperate store instead of one of the 3rd party "cingular authorized stores" and that I'd do better there... I sure do hope you're right. For the two year contract, they had better hand me two phones for my trouble...

from cingular's website:
When a new phone is available for your account, an "Upgrade phone" link will display in the list below. Phone upgrades do not incur the $36 activation fee; however, an upgrade charge of $18 will apply.

Didn't have problems with AT&T, don't have problems with Cingular currently (I bought 2 Razr's when I moved over, and I still haven't been charged for them after 3 months...long story short, one of em broke within a week of having it due to my son's accidentally closing the phone on the screen cleaner thingie that came with it, which has a rubber piece in the middle, and cracked the screen). Long story sorta short, I've no reason to switch yet.

Why Verizon, Jules?

Cingular > Verizon

That said if your old phones are GSM you should have no problem. If they were TDMA you will have to upgrade all of them with a new contract.

I dunno about the situation with your two free phones, but...

You don't have to wait until the end of your contract to upgrade your phone. I believe a phone will show eligibility for an upgrade 11 months after signing a contract. Of course, if you want to get the new subscriber/upgrade discount price, you're going to have to sign another contract.

In reply to Siva's post, if your old phones are TDMA, then you're on a TDMA plan. If you upgrade one or two phones to GSM, they will put it on the same plan. We were on an old FamilyTalk Preferred Nation plan for the longest time with two TDMA phones and one GSM. The only problem is you can't change your actual plan until you have all GSM phones. But I think any plan from two years ago would be GSM anyway.

Our contract doesen't exist anymore...

/FAMILY SH 600R/5K N&W 9 $39.99
/SH SECONDARY 5K N&W $9.99 PLAN $9.99
/SH SECONDARY 5K N&W $9.99 PLAN $9.99

500 daytime, 2000 Nighs and weekends

now it's $59.99 first two lines and $14.99 per addl. line for 500 daytime and unlimmited nights

not sure how I feel about getting sacked with that AND the upgrade fees

I've been using Cingular for 3 years now. I had a 1 year contract and I've just been going month to month since.

I'm looking to get a new phone soon, and I don't mind sticking with Cingular.

Their service is good.. has been for me at least.. but their billing department is full of either morons, scammers, or both.

Don't ever mail a check. They'll magically never get it.

Hmm... They MADE us change our plan from TDMA to GSM when we had to renew.

All of the phones are GSM. It's my understanding that the whole contract is up for renewal, but this is what cingluar's website says. Thanks for the 11 month tip.

From cingular's website:
07/26/03 - No Contract - Upgrade phone <--- my phone
10/24/04 - 2 Years - Will be eligible 07/24/06 <--- sister, happy with her phone
09/30/02 - 2 Years - Upgrade phone <--- brother, bought aftermarket phone, doesen't want new one, I want his for spare

If someone calls me during one its periods, it goes straight to voicemail even if I have 2-3 bars and it won't tell me I have a message for hours sometimes.

Hows that?

CDMA = Evil but I don't see a choice. I am moving in a couple of weeks and I hope that my phone will like my new surrounding and I can get the RAZR refresh when it comes out. Otherwise, its Sprint or VZW for me :(
