Anyone ever really kill their AMD chip by OC'ing??!!

I killed a K6-2 350 cpu (retail) by running it at 500mhz and 3.5volts (default it 2.2) but we were trying to kill it and see how far it would go

but I have never killed a chip (amd or intel) by oc'ing apart from that one

i haven't, however it seems the bigger risks involved in the new AMD chips is the core cracking more then frying the chip. you can't increase the voltage too much on a tbird and the higher end ones have a significantly reduced OC rate, (1ghz to 1.1 or 1.2 ghz, 1.1 to 1.2ghz, etc) which makes it less likely to fry one.

I fried a K6-2 450 by trying to get it to 700. Just would'nt get there. I got it stable at 623. Then i upped the voltage and it just fried. Along with my mobo, doesn't matter though.

A year and a half ago an AMD classic 500 w/ 500core came into my possesion which had supposedly been killed by o/c'ing, by running 700. I strongly suspect there had been messed with the voltage too however.

In a rounda bout way I did putting on my twist on Gorb back in the early days of the t-birds and turning the cpu into sand.

I think I just fried my CPU.

And probably my mobo too (MSI K7Tpro2a). I don't know for sure. Does anyone know how to check whether the mobo is okay or not? I tried turning it on without the CPU (with the graphic card attached, hooked up to the monitor), but there's nothing on the monitor. Black screen, that's all. All four DLED are red.

Shouldn't there be some BIOS message if you turn on the MSI K7T Pro2a (even without the CPU)?

I always thought you always *had* to have at least a CPU in there for it to power up... You usually don't need RAM to power up but you'd at least get some beeps but no BIOS screen. Same with video (if there's none built-in)... It might have something to do with the ATX spec....

Don't make me nervous.... I'm about to hook mine up to the PS and power up!

what exactly did you do sylvan? if nothing else works, unplug the maching, reset the cmos, replug, power on. There's a little jumper on the bottom right of the board, kinda looks like this[.]

move it down to the second two pins with the power off and then put it back, then turn it back on, it'll reset everything that you were playing with in the setup screen.

What's the most common way of frying your CPU..upping the voltage? Seems to be the most dangerous .

Are most of you first time overclockers, I'd like to know what your success has been in oc'ing for the first time, like did it work or not, and were you scared =)..hehe

i'm a first time OCer...i bumped my voltage to 1.775 in bios but actually 1.825v to get 1 gig out of a 700 duron...i'm hesitated to up the voltage any higher cus i thought the max was 1.8 which will actually be 1.85v. i'm happy with 1gig and don't think its worth it to go any higher
