Anyone ever made their own SCSI backplane?

Those things are freaking expensive. I was thinking you could make your own with a few 68-80pin converters and some drive rails.

Has anyone ever tried it before?

No. I have acquired both IBM and Compaq drive cages w/ backplane and trays, in order to build a server. But, it was too much hassle. Instead, I took a whole Compaq server case (very old--PPros!--Proliant 4500), gutted the inside, except for the drive cage, then installed ATX mobo and PSU. Much easier.

Drive trays came in both 68pin and 80pin styles, so I'm set, no matter which drives I acquire.

Hell no.
Damn, I don't want to even think about that.
