I have always been curious to do this, but dont want to pay for something not worthwhile.

Has anyone used Ancestry.com or any other similiar site? and what have you found

You have no right to criticize anyone when you misuse there in your thread topic.

You'll soon find you are mistaken. This is more like an english class than an actual english class.
One time we all had to write a 5-page paper on bunnies with pancakes on their heads.
You should start working on capitalization and sentance structure.

Ummmmm

Now, back on topic, my folks bought me Family Tree Maker quite a few years ago and all I have to say is if you want to go back any distance in your tree, be prepared to take it on as a second full time job. I got to my great, great grandparents and the work involved was too much so I gave up.

If you want some good places to start, look at census data, church records, etc. The mormon church has done a lot of geneological study. You might contact them.

Someone already compiled all the available data for my mom's family back to the 1640's (in Holland) and back to the early 19th century on my dad's side. But yeah, the mormons do alot of geneology work, and would have some good tips and resources.

I enjoy the off-topic English lessons! :D

I know The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons) keep a huge database of geneological info... I understand why they do it for themselves, but I've always wondered whether they'd have much info on just plain anyone (in the US or otherwise).

Anyway, I heard they took themselves online a few years back in order to provide their services to everyone. I don't know if this is the "official" Mormon geneological site (or if there are multiple Mormon geneological sites), but you might give it a look: http://www.familysearch.org/
