Anyone ever hear about this scam/prank?

My wife forwarded me an e-mail from a coworker of hers regarding some puppies that were found on the side of the road, they are free to a good home. It included a picture of some black lab mix puppies, and a contact with a home, work, and cell number.

Well, my wife said she'd be up for a new puppy, so I called.

The outgoing message said something to the effect of, "Hello, this is Emily. If you are calling about puppies please realize this is a vicious internet scam. There are no puppies. Please do not call about puppies. Please trace back the e-mail and let everyone know there are no puppies. I am getting hundreds of calls at home, my cell, and at work. This has to stop."

Then I started laughing and called back on speaker so my coworkers could hear. Anyway, someone got this woman good. I've never heard of this prank, I feel for this poor woman, I can only imagine the amount of calls she gets. Anyway, are you guys familiar with this one?

Well, her coworker did forward us an e-mail in the past regarding free German Shepherd puppies. I called, it was legit, but as you an imagine free German Shepherd puppies go fast, and we missed out.

poor woman. at least its mostly harmless. i wonder who she pissed off...
 
One my buddies used to play on each other was to put someone's car in the Pennysaver or Recycler for thousands under KBB. They would not stop getting cell phone calls for weeks........ :laugh:
 
the "non-net" version of this, was to hit the magazine stand or trade show, and sign up a co-worker for subscriptions, mailings, job requests, and requests for insurance quotes. i deliberately mis-spelled his last name, making it even more funny. took him years before he stopped getting publications.
