anyone ever have Windows not start explorer upon boot?

currently running Vista Ultimate SP2 and this happens 10% of the time.
i'll boot into windows and it'll just get stuck on a blank background with only the mouse cursor showing and active.
i have to start task mgr and launch explorer manually.

this has happened to me in XP as well, though less frequently and on different hardware.

common?

What kind of AV are you running? I only ask because we had an issue with symantec not causing explorer.exe to run for several minutes on our XP machines. Might be related?

I had this issue with a failed install of Logitech Mouseware. I never did figure out exactly how it happened, or how to (properly) fix it. I didn't need that XP install that much so I just installed another windows shell and it works fine.
