Anyone ever have a professional barber shop shave?

I had one over 10 years ago just to experiment with the novelty of it. it was a nice shave and on a whim I decided to do it again. My gf and I were walking around a city killing time, sight seeing when we came across a barber shop. Decided right there to get a shave and this experience was 10x better than my last one. Hot towels on the face, moisturizing lotions and to top it all off, a facial massage and shoulder rub at the end. While being shaved, I felt as if I could fall asleep in the chair. The barber even used an aftershave that he made in the back of the barber shop, made with spiced rum, cloves, bay leaves and other spices (!). My face felt great at the end of it and I was out of the chair in less than 20 minutes. One of the best and most comfortable shaves in my life, I could myself getting one before a special occasion where I needed to dress up or when I feel like pampering myself. It cost me $25 without tip. Anyone else ever tried this?

Back when I lived in Kansas I would go every 2-3 weeks and have it done at a local barbershop. The barber was in his late 70s and opened 2-3 times a week. Definitely worth it and the shop was a hang out for the older generation where I got to listen to stories of the past and their experiences in WWII.

Not a full shave as I always keep a short beard but the Barber shop I get my hair cut at they take a straight razor with hot cream and clean up my beard and hair on the back of my neck.

Yup, there was an old Italian dude down the street who used to do full shaves with the haircut at his barber shop. He had a hot lather machine & a huge straight shaving knife. Felt like heaven, even if you were just getting your sideburns & neck done. Scared the crap out of me due to the big knife, so I always held more still than I did at the dentist, but it was always worth it because it makes you feel awesome. Would not have believed it if I had not done it myself! I wish more places did that :thumbsup:

I've had a couple of them. Art of Shaving in Las Vegas and Truefitt and Hill in London. I would do it again of course, but not something I would do often. Maybe once a year.

St. James street is the shaving mecca of the world most say. Lots of really great barber shops and such.

Bobedee, you must have gotten one crap barber - a good straight razor shave is way better than a home razor shave.

there is a barber shop in town though, and i have always thought it would be cool to go and get a shave there though

I've used a straight razor for the last 25 years or so. I tried a safety razor after reading the hype around here, but it didn't feel right. I'm too used to using an open blade, and I couldn't get comfortable using something so small.

Sorry, i wear the 5 days of growth look b/c it is quick and efficient. Shave once a week. Minimize time shaving, maximize time browsing the web.

I got one once at a special end-of-Movember discount, but otherwise would have been $35.

I loved the experience.

I was 'meh' on the actual shave.

They guy doing it did all of the oils, preshave, hot towels, neck massage, more hot towels, more oils . . . all of which were fantastic.

The issue I had with it is that I suppose my skin wasn't used to it, and I got a bit irritated later on in the day. While the shave was indeed much closer than what I typically accomplish (I use Harry's disposable blades, new cartridge every Monday) I don't think I really got great utility out of it. I typically don't shave Friday - Sunday, so I'm not anal retentive in always having a close shave.

Again, though, the pampering experience was absolutely awesome. I would repeat again if I had a reason to pamper or celebrate something.

The problem is the 20 minute time sink...not counting wait if they don't take appointments.

A professional shave is a great experience. I don't care so much for it though. I have had one in my life and it felt good, but I was also looking to move on during it.

My face was smoother than it ever was in my life and I was smooth for much longer than my own shaves.

Well, it was on the morning I was getting married, the barber was in Wareham MA, the church was on Cape Cod and it was a Saturday (changeover day for a lot of renters and traffic onto and off of the Cape was brutal). I really didn't have an hour to spare. Yeah, but point well taken-I've done much dumber things than that.
