I always felt that the thing was getting banged up too much against my keys.

It's a 128mb Lexar. The light still comes on when I plug it in to the USB port but the PC doesn't recognize it.

Not me, but a friend of mine had one die on him. Nothing would happen when you plugged it into the USB port.

The light on the flash drive lights up but Windows Explorer doesn't show the drive.

Could my not being able to access the files on the USB jump drive be due to me not 'stopping' the device before I removed it last time?

Yes they can and do fail. They have a very short lifetime (maximum number of writes). But more often when I see this problem, it isn't the drive's fault. Windows sometimes gets messed up. Try it on another computer. If it works, then uninstall and reinstall your USB port drivers.

Nah. I've had that cause it to recognize and demand to format the drive, killing my files, but it didn't kill the drive itself.

Yep. Recently had one lock the host comp when inserted and then produce odd error messages from which the comp would take a very long time to recover.

Format your jump/flash drive or your hard drive?
