Anyone ever had this happen to their vehicle?

In extreme cold temps (like 0 degrees and below), has your rear window ever shattered? I closed a driver side read door and the whole window was spidered... and some glass fell in on the back seat, starting from the exact center of the window (size of a baseball)... Just curious b/c the car rental company claims that I broke the window, when I did not. I'm wondering how often this happens (statistics for Ford Escorts, 2001 would be nice but I couldn't find any using Google), to decide if I can take them to small claims to prove that I didn't do it. I do have 2 witnesses who saw this happen though.

Just make a claim on your own insurance. You probably won't be succesful in fighting the rental company. The car came back damaged, you signed a contract saying you would bring the car back in the same condition or pay for anything damaged, end of story, you will lose in court.

I have seen it happen on some older Broncos, but I haven't seen it on a passenger car.

Yup, they already took $500 off the comp on my dad's policy. I'll be damned if they get another penny though.

Yep - I had the back window of an old Dodge Omni 024 (2-door hatchback) shatter into a couple thousand pieces in the dead of winter several years ago. I think it was thermal shock (I started the car and turned on the electric rear defroster and went back in the house - when I came back out the entire window was cracked into thousands of pieces yet still intact)
