Anyone ever had meningitis?

Jules

Just had to take my Dad to the hospital yesterday evening when he was being unresponsive when you talked to him. He had some kinda Ear infection on thursday and went to see the doctor. They ended up sending him back with ear drops, some kinda pills and antibiotics in pill form. He seemed to be fine other then the ear bother him. It wasn't till Friday when he was just doing some odd walking around the house and not being very responsive when asked if he was ok.

I ended up taking him to the hospital and sure enough after 2 ct scans later and a spinal tap they find out he has meningitis. They also said something about air packets in his head or something like that. Anyone have any experience with this or had it?

Bad stuff no doubt, wish your dad best of luck hope he gets better... I had spinal meningitis back in 1963 and back then they knew very little about treating it but somehow I survivied...

Yeah meningitis is pretty serious. It's the infection of the layer that covers the brain. Causes swelling inside the skull. Treatable but definitely serious. Hope your father makes a swift and full recovery! It's a good thing you brought him back and they caught it.

I had it a few years ago. I woke up with the most excruciating headache and 105+ fever. I slept for almost 48 hours straight in the hospital - I actually enjoyed that part.

once my first year of college. 5 other kids in my dorm got it, so they made it mandatory to get vaccinated before attending college, used to be voluntary only.

I've had the vaccine and when I have kids my kids will be getting it to. The vast majority of people go through life without ever getting it, but if you do it can be extremely serious. It's not like a flu shot where you're just trying to avoid getting sick for a week.

Viral or bacterial?
If bacterial, Ceftriaxone+Vanco STAT.
If viral, not much you can do.

Got bacterial meningitis when I was 14. The first doctor I went to misdiagnosed it and I very nearly died.

Ruined alot of things for me.

benefits far outway the potential risks imo. 5 of us had it from the same dorm, 3 of us died. me and the other guy who survived werent retarded and went to the hospital right away though, the other kids didn't go till it was too late.

I had viral meningitis back in 1997. Spent 11 days in the hospital, lost 50 lbs (mostly muscle), spent the following months learning how to walk again and take care of myself. I was 22, about to turn 23. Incredibly awful.

Same experience I had with bacterial. Had to learn how to walk and eat again.

Never had it, but thankfully your Father's case was recognized quickly.

I hope his treatments go well - my best to him and your family.

I had it in 1997. I almost died. Wiped me out for 2 solid weeks.

Good thing you took him to the hospital.

I hope he feels better.

Had viral last year. Wasn't too bad (for me) anyway. Spent 3 nights at the hospital. Worst part were the headaches from the spinal tap.

Next month will be my last payment for the bill. 😀

Good luck and I hope things work out for your dad.
