Anyone ever had dental implants? UPDATE: the oral surgeon was an A$$...

seriously, I mean artificial teeth... I'm missing a couple teeth on the bottom row (passed down from my mom's side of the family) and I've had braces on for a couple years, partially to open up a gap for the artificial teeth... metal screw-like thingy that act like roots are gonna get implanted in my jaw tomorrow and I was wondering if anyone's had experience with this, ie. amount of pain/experience afterwards

UPDATE: it didn't happen... the guy wanted the entire payment (4000 bucks or so) upfront and refused budge when my dad asked if he could pay in multiple payments. The guy insisted that he thought we agreed to it, though I don't remember him ever saying that it would be a one-time fee. He was the one that actually cancelled the operation

(this oral surgeon's office was really close to where I live) so we found a different guy through my orthodontist... the initial appointment for that is on Tuesday.

Also, I'd already taken some of the pre-operation antibiotics and painkillers... so yeah, i just went straight to sleep.

I had FOUR teeth put in a few years ago, hurt like a b*tch and I was doped up on codine for 2 weeks.

bwahahahah. 😉 (We're roommates and I can't wait until I see him all out of it 😀)

heh...sorry. no, that was a joke, my teeth were crooked as all hell, but I wasn't short any. Hope everything goes well at the dentist.

Never had them myself, but I'd like to get two replaced from playing minor league hockey in my younger days. Let me know what they soak ya for yours.

I just recently had to have all 32 teeth removed, and I will be getting 8 implants to achor a permant upper and lower denture in the coming month. I will be having four posts put in each jaw. I'm due to have this done sometime this month, so I'll let you know how it goes.

🙂

BTW, the 32 teeth removal was a breeze. I actually didn't even need to take the pain killers they prescribed (Vicodin) and I threw them away. The day I got back from surgery, I needed a couple Advil to sleep, but that was about it. I would imagine the pain from the posts would be less.

does "soak" mean "cost"?

sorry, i'm not down wit all dis slang yo

but over $1000 per tooth plus sedatives... yeah, I'm not asking for anything from my parents for a while...

whoa! yeah they gave me some Vicodin too... what about swelling/bruising?

Actually, I had neither. I had a bit of swelling the first couple days, but they told me to just ice my cheeks if I swelled at all as it will prevent bruising. The only part that was gross was I bled for a couple days...had to do a lot of spitting, but pretty much no big deal. I doubt you will have that from the implants procedure though. My whole upper and lower gumline was basically stiched from end to end.

I should add that I probably have a higher pain tolerance since I dealt with 21 abcessed teeth for almost 2 years.

LOL. I think mine cost like $1500, too. I didn't have any pain. None. When I left he gave me the script for Vicodin and he said "If it starts to hurt, take ibuprofen. If it still hurts, take the Vicodin, but don't drive."
He called me that night to check up on me. I never so much as took an ibuprofen.

Amusingly, I have the same exact condition as you - my mom was missing an adult tooth on the bottom. She still has the baby tooth, actually. They removed mine when I got braces, and now the implant fills the hole.

I got mine done under a local anesthetic. He used a little pneumatic drill to bore the hole, and he actually has to thread the self-tapping post into the hole. Staring up the shaft of a screwdriver as a dude drives a screw into your head is an experience like no other.

So it's painless, permanent, easy to care for. You won't be disappointed!

Dude, you'll be fine.

My Dad's a dentist and he started doing implants maybe ~2-3 years ago, and he says he does them well now. When he was first getting trained to do it, etc, I watched a video about it with him. Lemme tell you, if you had to watch that video immediately before going into the dental office you'd rather gum it for a while 🙂

Anyhow, my dad says the lack of pain is incredible (considering that you're basically hammering posts into the patient's bone). Anyhow, he says he's carried on conversations with people while they were in the chair, and I think i remember him mentioning that one of his patients was totally off of pain killers 2 days after.

Dude, those little metal post teeth you're gonna have under neath your fake ones are gonna be BADASS. Get in a drunken fight at a party, if he breaks your false teeth, and you give him a bloody grin with little metal stub teeth, he's gonna leave you alone for the rest of the night 🙂

Good luck!

I've got two on my lower jaw. I don't remember the pain, but I'm sure I had to eat soft foods for awhile. I'm extremely happy with mine and I'd get them again in a heartbeat.
