My tonsils have given me problems all of my life but I never really did anything about it, I just put up with it. I'm 20 now, in college, and I'm thinking of getting my tonsils out. They've been giving me trouble for the past month or so, being swollen and irritated for no apparent reason. One morning I woke up and I thought I was going to swallow the little dangly thingy every time I took a breath, which was weird. Very swollen. I don't know if it's some kind of chronic infection, or what. I also get tonsilliths with some frequency.

Has anyone ever had their tonsils out? I've heard that it gets more risky with age, so I'd like to do it now if in fact I'm ever going to get it done. How much does a tonsillectomy cost? I don't think my health insurance will cover it as it's probably elective surgery in their book. (Mega life and health)

I was about 8 years old, I'm sure you recover a lot faster when you are young. You should discuss it with your doctor and give your insurance company a call.

It's not elective surgery if you are getting infections, snore, have trouble swallowing pills, eat slow, etc..... Go to your doc and get a diagnosis of the problem with your tonsils and a tonsillectomy should be covered by your insurance.

I lost 10lbs eating popsicles and ice cream when I had mine out. And I was unconscious about 1/2 the day during recovery. Wasn't too bad. I guess some people have bleeding down the throat which results in a lot of vomiting - unpleasant when you have open wounds.
