I typed in macbook as my target location in Firefox, thinking it would either auto complete the .com or send me to the first relavant website featuring the macbook but what I got was this.

It was a domain without an extension. No .com/.net.org/etc. I tried the same thing in IE and got the same website. Does anyone know of any other websites like this without an extension?

Let me guess, you are on a school or company network, right?

What you are seeing is a local web server page which is being hosted on another computer in your network which is named "macbook"

about:blank was in the address bar.

Sounds about right.

When I type it I see Google's address flash in the status bar and then get forwarded to apple.com/macbook.

Either that or there could be an entry in his HOSTS file for 'macbook'

I see that all the time.. if there is no start page people are just completely lost.

yep, same here. our intranet site (which is our homepage) was down one day and people were calling complaining that the internet didn't work.

My host file is default. It must be something with Comcast's DNS servers here in Sacramento. I'll test it again when I get back to Fremont and see what comes up. I also have Comcast down there.

For some reason tracert automatically adds .net to the trace, so that's no help. Going to www.macbook.net it appears to go to the same page as macbook.nothing, but in chinese.

C:\>tracert macbook

Tracing route to macbook.net [222.236.44.25]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

OP did you miss my post? Youre on a LAN right? Your computer can see other computers on the network, one of them is hosting a default website and its hostname is macbook

What if he is on wireless? Then his server is doing the macbook site.

I'm an a wireless router connected directly to a Comcast cable modem. There are 2 PC's connected directly to the router through the ethernet ports, another laptop that my mom uses on wireless, and another laptop that my brother uses on wireless. That's 4 PC's besides my own, none of which *should* be hosting this macbook site. The only thing I can think of are:

1. Virus/malware/whatever on one of my family members computers - but what's the point of it hosting this site?
2. Comcast DNS server has macbook.nothing set to this site intentionally or unintentionally
3. Another computer is hijacking our wireless connection and hosting this site (encryption on router is only WEP so anyone with some know-how can crack it. I don't live here so I don't have access to the router to check the logs) - but then again, what's the purpose?
4. Something else beyond my grasp.

You are thinking way too hard.

There is a host on your network, and it is named macbook. End of story.

Change to WEP2 and reboot router. (I would look at the MAC table on your router and count how many devices are connected first).

EDIT: For clarification, there is no such thing as just a single word domain. It requires .com, .net, etc.

As Evadman said: nslookup macbook

The results will be less exciting than you seem to be hoping.
