Anyone ever go to sears auto?

I'm going on a big road trip (>1000 miles) and I want a thorough inspection of my car - especially the brakes which have been acting strangely lately.

Walmart seems like a big no-no. And I don't like taking my car to small shops - bad experiences with those things. So I need one that is pretty reputable but cheaper than the Chevy dealer's service center.

Anyone have experience with Sears Auto? Or have another place to recommend? Thanks!

I would find a local non chain type place and have them check it out. Midas will check things out for free but they often fix things that don't really need fixed and they charge tons compared to other places. Walmart only does tires/oil. Ask some co-workers on who they go to and like.

I second finding a local non chain. Sears is not very reliable except in battery and tire replacement.

Definitely ask people you know and see who they take their cars too. That's how I found my mechanic here in Madison. Word of mouth is often the best way to go.

My experience with Sears. Nice people, courteous, attentive, okay. However I took my car in for an alignment not too long ago. They ended up breaking a piece of plastic that covers the top portion of the steering wheel. I was pissed when I found it. He stuck it underneath the seat in the hopes that I wouldn't see it. But the alignment went well and it's still aligned to this day.

I prefer small non-chain shops - word-of-mouth is, IMHO, the best way to find a good mechanic.

Sears would only be my choice in an emergency. I would locate a non-chain or directly deal with another dealership.

I've had 3 bad experiences at sears.

1. Messed my alignment up and woudln't re-do it. Called the branch manager and he got it done for me for free.

2. Nasty cashiers

3. Guy told me that all four of my steel rims were bent and need to be replaced along with new lug nuts. Went to Mr. Tire and they said it was Bull shit. Even took me to the balancer machine and showed me the numbers.

Best really is a local non-chain. Most of the large chains hire very incompetent "mechanics". My last experience at a large chain was actually at a Sears many years ago for a battery replacement, and it turned into a HUGE mess when it took them 90 minutes to do - mostly because the grease monkeys were joyriding with my car.

The guys that work at Sears (I wouldn't call them mechanics) are the same guys you will find working at Pep Boys, K & Wal mart. Nuff said?
