anyone here previously experience a really hostile and mentally tiring job experience that you put up with where it makes you not want to work for at least a year and live off unemployment checks? It was also a bad cultural fit which made you miserable.

I always feared unemployment but it recently happened (fired for first time). A part of me was happy for the separation but I'm really terrified of what's to come. I'm not sure if I can find another job related to what I want to do in this economy, and I'm not even sure if I want to work again for another 12 months after going through the horrible experience in my previous job.

Also, how I can get my motivation back? because it's gone.

Take the time off, and recuperate. Check job listings every day in case the "perfect" job turns up, but wait a little bit before you do it seriously, and are willing to take less than perfect jobs.

Did you get fired or quit, I was under the impression that you couldn't draw unemployment if you quit a job.

I'm in that situation right now, but I'm able to post for new jobs within the company in the middle of November which has me truly excited.

When I worked as a server tech for a hospital that had an insane IT manager, I felt like that every day. With everyone doing the "stress leave" thing, I highly considered it. I just kept forcing myself to tough it, and was always keeping an eye open for a way out.

Eventually found another opening within my company and got out. I went to school for IT and that is what I had experience in. Ended up in a NOC which is mostly telephony stuff, and I think it's the best move I ever did. I love my new job, and learning a lot. I also work in a pretty cool building.

If you go on unemployment, actively job search, don't waste that time doing nothing, as much as it might be tempting. Also see if you can execute something that will bring you income, such as a home based business.

Unless you live with family, don't you need a paycheck to afford rent/mortgage?

I would think food/shelter/bills would be considerable motivation to get a new job.

I'm under 30 and I'm actually planning to move back home this weekend for a while so there will be no rent. I also have no debt and have decent amount in my savings as a rainy fund + UI that I'll be filing.

Get motivation back by knowing there are good jobs/opportunities out there. Alot of areas are defined by the jobs that exist there. Instead of moving in with family maybe you'll have to move somewhere else. I know me personally my family kind of stifles my entrepreneurial side.

I wouldn't hesitate to just move to South Dakota on a whim, get a CDL and drive trucks or something. A friend was just telling me about someone who was an architect and actually made more money driving trucks in Oregon. I guess if there is high demand for something, and architects are in low demand, thats just how it works out.

Been there. I had a great job and the company got bought out and I got thrown into a group where I was relatively "overpaid" compared to everyone else. The new manager made it known after three months in during review cycle, flat out says I won't get any raise for a while regardless of my good performance. He seemed downright rather hostile which made me wonder if I was paid as much as him. I'm fairly certain the only reason I was still around was due to my knowledge of the product and the new company needed to keep the customer base happy during transition. I pretty much had no motivation other than looking for a new job knowing the clock was ticking. Luckily found one but it took 4 months and even better pay. I walked away from 40k's worth of stock options that would've vested in 5 months but have no regrets. Life is too short to put up with crap. All I can say is there's better options out there. Don't give up.

Yeah, got burnt out of IT with one job cause we never had what we needed and the CIO was a moron. I made excellent money for the time though and had some friends there so I stuck it out. Still ended up leaving it for awhile, and it made me avoid getting a degree in computer science, but in the end I missed being in IT. Finally got a good job in IT which I for the most part enjoy, even though the place sucks due largely to political leadership bs. I'm sticking it out cause I'm writing my ticket out of here with all I'm doing. The place may not be perfect but I've found the career I want, and I know I'll find a better place soon.

If you don't like what you do, it won't matter where you work you'll allways be a bit disgruntled.
