so are you getting paid for this habitat for humanity project. I thought it was all volunteers, if it is, then which volunteer gets fined?

Our safety company at work told us a story about a contractor who was working on a roller coaster at an amusement park. The local newspaper put a picture of two of their guys working on it with no fall protection on the front page. OHSA cut out the picture, attached it to a 75k fine....mailed it to the contractor.

He also told us about a company he represented(electrical contractor) who was cited 3 times for the same violation in 5 years, leaning an unopened step ladder against wall and working on it, 50K fine.

OHSA has a job to do, and it sometimes sucks, but it is for your safety, and at the same time it prevents your competition from undercutting you if you do follow the rules.

I received a violation 2k for operating a all terrain forklift that had a crack in the windshield. Didnt know it was illegal, lift didnt belong to us, but we know now.

Never fvck with OSHA.

Follow their guidelines. No one being hurt in 5 years doesn't mean sh!t when all it takes is one person to fall and put your ass out business.
Many OSHA guildelines are very restrictive and become a huge hinderance to jobs are are very low on the risk meter.
Safety measures are great, but all workers take the jobs knowing the risks. Anyone who says different is lieing.

I am a "volunteer" who is paid by the AmeriCorps program in return for my service of 1700 hours to this Habitat affiliate.

as a general contractor, I've gotten a couple of fines. We get fined any time a sub is cited, and that hurts more than when our company was the actual violator.

You wouldn't believe the crap they fine you for now days. Because the company I work for has government contracts, if someone on our crew takes their half-hour lunch break more than 5 hours into their shift, we could be fined $1,000 for violating some regulation or other. When we dispose of hazardous waste, like paint or something like that, it has to go into a specifically colored bucket, if it's in the wrong type of bucket, we get nailed with a fine. Last time they warned us, and said if they caught it again they'd hit us with a $250,000 fine, which is WAY above the actual fine, but apparantly they are within their ability to do so.
