Anyone ever get ticketed for a rolling stop?

So I got a ticket the other day for "failure to stop at a stop sign"

I did not make a full stop... it was a rolling stop like I always do. But the cop said he normally gives warnings for these but since its "Safety Week" in Mountain View he had to write me up. He wrote me as going 8mph through the stop sign... I'm pretty sure it was less than that.

Anyhow, has anyone gotten one of these before? How much was the ticket? And if you chose to battle it out in court, what was your defense? I'm sure a "rolling stop" argument won't hold much water in court even though everyone does it.

Rolling stop offenders or California stoppers as we call them around here are a big pet peeve of mine. I doubt you will get off of it. Not everyone does a rolling stop, in fact, I'd wager only 50 percent of everyone I see at stop signs does it.

I think that since you acknowledged the fact that you know you did it you should just pay the fine and get it over with. Maybe this will persuade you to stop fully before proceeding from now on??

You have no defense; you made a rolling stop. Just pay it - it's a very minor ticket.

It depends on the sign for me. THere is one stop sign by my apartment that I've only ever stopped at probably 3 times. I know a cop WILL nail me one day, but damnit it's a stupid stop sign! I cruise through it at 15 mph (it's a right turn with great field of view), but when I get that ticket oh well.

I have and you won't get off. It says STOP, not YIELD.

Well this stop was also in my neighborhood where traffic is very light and I am not exaggerating when I say everyone makes a rolling stop at this particular sign.

I will probably pay it, but was just curious if anyone's had experience with this before.

In my humble defense, it was what most people would consider a stop :) Not a full stop, wait 1 second, then go... but a stop which would be safe even if there were pedestrians walking.

did the sign say slow down or stop? 'cause if it said slow down, you're fine. check the sign to make sure before you argue it in court.

I only flat out run 4 way stop signs...when the field of view is huge in my neighborhood...its funny cuase its so ingrained in people's heads that they should stop at stop signs...I mean, as long as you're not going to cuase an accident who cares if u run a stop sign at 4 in the morning or if no ones around.

Have you considered that's what they're trying to stop you from doing?

A rolling stop is an oxymoron. Stop means NO forward motion. Learn the lesson. Then, pay the ticket, or opt for traffic school to get it off your record, and move on with your life. :)

Yes, generally when there's a STOP sign, you have to STOP.
Your options:
- Pay the ticket and be more careful
- Go to driving school to remove the point from your license
- Go to court and hope the cop doesn't show up

If you read my posts carefully, you would notice that I am not saying I wasn't guilty.

Trust me, everyone at this stop makes a rolling stop, and much faster than what I made. Of course, this is no excuse for me to disobey the law, but just wanted to point out my bad luck. Even the cop said "you were at the wrong place at the wrong time" and said he'd normally let my action go if it wasn't "Safety Week"

you didn't notice the cop at the intersection? if you had been observing the intersection properly(and safely) you should have seen the cop and made a concious effort to do a proper stop.

That's all fine and dandy and may be true, but it won't mean jack in court. You'll have to pay it obviously. Like I said I roll through certain stop signs as well but no matter how many people roll through it just cause you're the one who was caught doesn't mean you should be let off on it. It's not really "bad luck" since somebody was going to get it; it just happened to be you. Bad luck would be if your brakes failed and you rolled through it - but this in some ways you were asking for!

Eh... I didn't write that quote you were quoting. Not sure if you're aware of that.

Anyway, it was bad luck, but I deserved it. Fair enough?

My point was that the police can ticket about 85% of the drivers that go through that intersection if they really wanted to and really enforced the full stop, wait, then go criterion that I was subjected to. The police try to be objective about differentiating bewteen 0mph and 2mph, and I appreciate their existance. But there is much subjectivity in catching one out of hundreds, and then enforcing the rules only on "Safety Week"

I always make a conscious attempt to make a full stop, but everytime I stop all the way some punk behind me hits the horn!!! :|

Around here a lot of people try to "sneak" through 4-way stops by rolling through very close behind the car that has the right-of-way. If someone behind me is being a punk or is trying to roll the stop sign, I teach them a lesson now by decelerating normally toward the stop sign, then hitting the brakes hard right as I reach the limit line. They are usually tailgating anyway, so that teaches them a lesson.

Uhm...the law is the law, you're supposed to stop. You didn't. Pay up. Don't complain, don't try to weasel out of it; you asked for it, and you sure as heck got it (the ticket).

Did you even read my replies to people who've posted exactly the same thing you did? Or did you just make a judgement from reading headlines?

Well, I read the thread. And I think you're a retard either way. Pay the court for rolling the stop. Fight the other half of the ticket.

You read the thread but don't understand, and resort to calling people names. Great
