I am wondering if anyone has gotten caught or been sent a notice by their school/university for having or sharing copyrighted material over the Internet.

Like everyone I know here got an e-mail saying there would be disiplinary action if they were caught and the e-mail was made to look like it was only sent to you, though everyone I talked to in the dorm got one.

I didn't, but I know that last year a bunch of people got emails for sharing movies.
I think the emails even said what was being shared that was illegal.

I know of people who have been caught. I simply don't share, just leech. What is interesting is that the ports were blocked first semester, so I had to use work arounds, but second semester, they opened them back up.

Had a few meetings with the IT people and assistant dean. Was told to stop activity and my account was on probation.

Reminds me of when I was a freshman at college. They had the web set up to go through a proxy (blocked out all porn and other "offensive" materials) and one of my friends found out if you just entered an alternate proxy server into the settings, it would work anywhere.

Of course, they kicked you out if they caught you. :)

He also ran a Warez site on the dorm's T1. Used some kind of IP spoofing I think as well to hide.

Twice! hehe. Second time I thought I was safe running Peer Guardian. No charges or anything, just had to send an email saying I wasn't sharing any more.

I lied ;)

I got caught for downloading something - don't remember what it was, but I think it was game demo or something.

I was told that downloading 87 MB in one day for non-academic use was unacceptable, and that if I did it again I could face disciplinary action. That was shortly before my school started really clamping down on network use (not file sharing per se, as Napster was brand new and still boasted a rather select user group) due to soaring bandwidth costs. Shortly before I left, they were considering charging for bandwidth usage at the rate of £0.04 per MB downloaded between the hours of 0500 and 0100.

I ran an IRC file server and the network admin shut down my ethernet port, and told me to come into his office.

I BS'd and said I have many people using my computer (which was true) and said they were forgetting to turn off Napster, which caused the excessive bandwidth usage. :D What surprised me was he told me he used Napster to download his oldies and said he understands. I was thinking, "WOW" and he turned my port back on.

Yeah, I got busted last year for distributing movies... I had just reformatted and forgot to disable file sharing on Kazaa... In the end, my computer was removed from the school's network. I don't think my school really cared though, as I was able to just re-register my computer on the network with a different comp name :)

I sent my entire school district several explictives. Some admin left novell's messenger open. That got me 3 weeks no computer use and community service. What actually happen? If I were you I would.

-Change your MAC Address
-Use FTPs and try to only download not upload
-Shove a assload of spyware on your computer
-Act like your're completely computer incompent

ouch, risky stuff... i got in mini-trouble once for surfing porn at work while on the graveyard shift (though everyone did it then). now (unlike all the other console operators) i wont surf the web at all from their network, I only SSH into my box at home and then tunnel vnc or rdp thru ssh and surf using my home bandwidth and only making 1 (though constant) connection to the outside world

of course this wont prevent them if they really wanted to get me for something, they could do like my high school network admin did to bust me - voyeurishly screenshot-capture my desktop with spy software. the admin back in high school caught me poking around on their new network, sending novell message bombs to other schools and the like.. managed to get kicked out of my programming classes, all computer -related credits sruck from my record, one week of on campus suspension (only my dad's hell raising in the prinipals office saved me from a month of off-campus 'special school for the real assholes and thugs '
oh and i officially couldnt come near a school district computer for the remainder of the school year

now that sysadmin works at the same datacenter i do, as the chief network architect.. =/ course we're pals now

I just paid for non-Draconian highspeed and skipped around all those asinine rules. 500MB a week total traffic my ass.

I got nailed by the RIAA in '98 - verbal warning. I had a sweet FTP going long before mp3 trading was mainstream. Napster came around 1-2 years later and things haven't been the same since.
