Anyone ever fly RyanAir?

So I'm debating whether to take a train from Rome to Paris on a trip I'm taking in a few months. The train is more expensive and takes longer. My alternative is RyanAir. THe flight is an obscenely (too low...) price of about 8 Euros per person. WTF? How can an airline charge so low (excluding taxes). Just wondering what opinions are. I know to expect no frills, but I would like to make sure I arrive alive...

Well, first they dehydrate you completely....

Then they scam you for your credit card number and strand you in Rome.

I'd say take the train. It's more scenic anyway, and what is the trip from paris to rome by train? 12 hours? 8?

I think it's 15 hours.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of negative stuff regarding RyanAir, but it's just crazy how there's really no alternative when it comes to airlines going from Rome to Paris. (Expedia prices for alternatives were about $900/person.

I would not fly a cheap cheap airline if I had a choice. They're cheap because they buy old planes and maybe cut some corners on maintenance. Think ValuJet.

I flew RyanAir from Salzburg to London a few months ago and I didn't have any problems. I too am a little skeptical of such cheap fair, but I took no issue with the flight or service.

People were trying to cram their fat American asses onto that airline when I was flying out of Mexico at the beginning of the year. Now I'm American too, but the people that seemed attracted to that airline looked to be the less than desirable types. I wouldn't fly them, ever.

For 4 of us to fly RyanAir from Rome to Paris would cost about $100 US. Factoring in travel costs to and from the airport, it seems to be about $200 US, and prob. will take 7 hours of travel time. OTOH, to take the train would cost us $600 US, and take 15 hours of time (tho' most of that would be overnight.) I'm having a hard time convincing myself to take the train, since it costs more and it'll take longer than the plane.

There is no assigned seating, so you fight for seats. Also, they flight out of boonie airports, so you take a bus into town (usually around 20 minutes). If you don't mind waiting, its a good price. But if you don't want the hassle, just pay extra to fly into the city.

Flying nose first into a swamp at 600+ miles/hr does not really excite me ;)

I flew on Ryanair from Brussels to London. The plane was delayed, but other than that there were no problems. If I were you I would definitely fly.

RyanAir is fine. Flown in and out of Paris and flew into London too. Their airport in Girona is very convenient for me (it's there "Barcelona" airport). Bewere the hidden costs! They add a lot to the basic fare with fees and taxes, plus getting to and from their airports in East Bumblebutt costs some money and takes a while. For example, the "Paris" airport is a load of nonsense -- it's 70km out of town! They have a bus into the city timed to the flight, but prepare for some extra time if there's traffic.

I'd say despite the little hiccups and whatnot for direct travel from Rome to Paris, RyanAir (pronounced the same backwards, btw) >> train.

PM if you'd like more info.

Fly with them. They do get some bad press but what company doesn't?

I think my gf has flown with them and I would definately fly with them I had to go somewhere.

DO buy stuff and bring it onboard the plane as they DO CHARGE YOU FOR DRINKS AND STUFF on the plane. This lowers the fair and lets flyers have the option to buy stuff.

They shouldn't have any big delays.

They are cheap as they fly to non 'major' airports. They fly to smaller airports that are less busy and they are SUPPOSE to have less traffic and less delays also because of this. They also bought lots of NEW PLANES AFTER 9/11 for HUGE DISCOUNTS and thats is how they saved a lot of money. They also cram their planes full of people instead of leaving seats empty so that helps pay for the fuel.

All in all a very good business model and they make money and you get cheap flights :)

As others have said - the jets are fine, but they tend to use the smaller, slightly out of the way airports, and don't expect any frills, or a specific seat. (make sure to bring your own snacks and drinks for the flight, though, as they charge the earth.)

In US terms, they are the same as Southwest

It certainly beats the train for that distance

Ive used them and theyve always been great and relatively reliable. Sometimes they run late, but ive flown with them 4 times and never had a major problem (and who complains about being a little late when youre paying $30 for a ticket?)

RyanAir and EasyJet are both great carriers for getting around Europe. Also, the price of the ticket is not static. As more tickets are sold and the date approaches, the fares go up. By the day of the flight, I wouldn't be surprised if it's up to $100/ticket. I've flown easyJet numerous times. Other than a couple delays, no complaints here. It is like Southwest in that you don't have assigned seats. You get a number upon check in and board according to numbers. Flight can't be too long.

Be sure and research. As mentioned before, they are often using rural airports and it can require some extra money getting to and from these airports. But, if it suits your needs, no reason to avoid them.

So, in short, they are fine but generally out of the way. Buy your tickets early as they only go up in price as the date approaches.

No, it was ValuJet. It is now AirTran. They suffered a well-publicized crash in the Florida Everglades, an event which damaged consumer confident in no-frills airlines.

But the crash was not due to their no-frillsness. I would not be worried about flying on either AirTran or RyanAir.

Thanks for the advice guys. I did my research with regard to the airports. My main issue with RyanAir is that their times for the flight suck. They have 2 flights daily, one at about 6:45 AM and another at 7 PM. Since I'll be staying at a hotel in the heart of Rome, I guess I'd either have to take a cab at 3:30 AM (Can I even get a 3 AM cab?) or, I"d have to likely check out at noon from the hotel and go straight to the airport, waiting there for 4 hours for the plane, unless I could find temporary storage for the luggage. Suggestions on which flight to take would be great.

Most hotels will let throw your bags down and come back for them. Or, get a locker at the train station for the day while you're sight seeing.

Exactly. Ask the hotel if you can leave your bags there for a while after checking out. We've had much success with this method.

Also, good advice from royaldank.
