Anyone Ever Fall Asleep At The Wheel?

2 weeks ago I was coming home about 5am, and it happened to me. I was on the expressway, when I woke up to the sound of grinding metal. My brand new car just sideswiped the sh!t out of a gaurd rail. I was lucky there was a rail in the first place and that I didn't hit an on coming car. It was the scariest thing that happened to me. I had been drinking earlier in the night, but stopped at midnight. We were at a casino in Niagra Falls and then went out in Buffalo. A friend drove, and I slept the whole way back. My car was at my friends about 10 miles from where I live. I thought, I'm tired but I can make it home no prob. WRONG!! I'll never try to be a hero again.

Anyone have a similar story?

I have, it sucks. Didn't get into any accidents or anything, just woke up in a different lane every few minutes. I don't know how I didn't die, it's amazing.

I have a long drive home to visit family during breaks from school. I nodded off one time, but woke up right away. I was riding the stripe, but no cars. So I was safe. But now, I make sure I get plenty of rest and load up on caffeine before I go. And my car stereo makes for a fun drive.

Back in college when i used to MUD.........
we got done mudding at like 5 AM. so I left college and headed home.
I was pretty good until 45 minutes into the drive where i got this heavy
sleepiness. and i tried to stay up but i kept on dozing off. next thing you
know all i see is white and I am asleep. I dozed off at a 2 way.
i was on the wrong lane and I wake up to a Honking Truck coming straight at me.
i woke up and swerved my car to barely avoid the truck. All i know is
I saw my life flash before my eyes that day...
hehee glad im alive..!!:)

I had a friend that wrecked her brand new Isuzu Rodeo. She got stupid and pulled an all nighter for an exam. After that she drove from Boston to NYC for a party. She hit the road again to get back to Massachusetts at 4AM. Somewhere in Connecticutt she fell asleep at the wheel. She woke up when the tires hit the rumble strip. The sudden wake up startled her and she jerked the wheel back to the right and over compensated. In panic she jerked it back left. This rolled her truck whcih flipped twice and then skidded a half-mile on the rightside. She was VERy lucky and only escaped with cuts and bruises. Very stupid and unnecessary incident.

Its always been a big problem for me. It happens a lot on the way home from work, 2-3 secs at a time.

This latest incident is hopefully a kick in my ass for me to just stay at a friends or call for a ride.

I think about that feeling of waking up to that screeching sound and all this smoke that I saw in the rear view mirror. Its an eerie feeling.

i've got a 45 minute commute each way every day, on the highway, and boy is that tough. somedays i find myself nodding every minute or so, struggling to keep awake. so i started going to bed at 10:30 and that helped a hell of alot. and look, it's 11:05! you are all responsible for my death tomorrow.

I used to fight it constantly when I was working overnight. Typically was a problem after a 10+ hour night. Waking up with your right wheels off the road is not a pleasant experience.

I wish that rough edge was on all the expressways around my city, but its only on the NYS Thruway. I need it.

I don't know bout you, but for me its only the boring expressways that kill me.

In 1974, I had been up for about 36 hours, and had just pulled a double shift at Grizzly Bear Pizza (I was the "flunky" manager). Running an errand for the shop, I fell alseep at the wheel, went through a stop sign, and got broadsided.

Totaled the car...

A cherry 1968 Camaro...

Not really a fall asleep thing... insulin reaction behind the wheel. Your brain stops working. I came to being hauled off to the paddy wagon with my skylark having plowed into a parked huge old buick sedan... I remember it well... :(

Oops.

Coming back from the racetrack in Greensboro, NC, I started falling asleep a few seconds at a time. Very scary since I was pulling a 5000+lb trailer. :(
Got so bad that I pulled over and made my girlfriend drive...and guess what; I was so nervous with her pulling the trailer that I couldn't sleep!

Heh... I have fallen asleep at the wheel and driven off the road twice. Both times I was going slowly enough that neither me or the car was seriously injured. Guess I was just lucky. Now I don't drive tired, I think I've used up all of my extra lives. :)

I did once on my way home from the beach after graduating high school. Dark, straight road. Three guys asleep in the car. Hell, I may as well sleep too. I woke the guy in the front seat up, got a no-doze from him and we got a mountain dew from a gas station vending machine.

Not sure if that woke me up, or if it was getting a ticket about 2 miles down the road.

About three years ago.

It's very scary to hear this thought go through your head:
"I'll just close my eyes for a block."
And to have it sound perfectly logical and sane.
